The City of Carson is now accepting applications for the position of Recreation Assistant III-Early Childhood Teacher's Aide

Vacancy Information

The City of Carson is seeking eligible candidates for the position of Recreation Assistant III - Early Childhood Teacher's Aide. The ideal candidate is a current or recent college student who enjoys working with children (pre-school age), in a fun and collaborative work environment. Prior to applying, candidates must have completed core early childhood units, which include completion of the following:

This is a part-time unclassified position, limited to 980hours/fiscal year. This position is represented by AFSCME 809 Part-time, working five days a week (Monday to Friday), 12 noon to 5:30 pm (includes a half hour unpaid lunch break). Schedule may vary between 12 noon to 5:30 PM.

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Site Director and Child Care Teacher, assists in the daily instruction and presentation of activities for pre-school children at a day care site. This is a part-time position, and the work schedule may vary. This is an at will position.

Essential Duties

(These functions are representative and may not be present in all positions in the class. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind related duties and work assignments.)

  • Assists in providing educational, recreational and other enrichment activities to pre-school children
  • Provides a safe and positive learning environment
  • Maintains instructional areas in a neat, clean and orderly condition
  • Provides instructions, demonstrations and activities as appropriate to assigned age group
  • Supervises students on educational and recreational excursions
  • Participates in a variety of community and classroom activities and events
  • Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Completion of thirty (30) college semester units which must include at least twelve (12) semester units of early childhood education (ECE) college courses, possession of a valid American Red Cross Standard First Aid certificate and one (1) year of leadership experience in early childhood programming.

Knowledge of: Early childhood development theory, practice and programming; early childhood literature and developmental materials; developmental and appropriate activities for 3- to 5-year-old children; developmental programming presentation.

Skills and/or Ability to: Learn the principles of supervision; learn and apply first aid, CPR and safety techniques; lead learning activities for early childhood development, growth and behavior; follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; effectively communicate orally and/or in writing; efficiently organize and prioritize work assignments.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Employee accommodations for physical or mental disabilities will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Positions in this class normally are required to stand, stoop, reach and bend; required mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects; may be required to perform work which involves frequent lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects which may be approximately 40 pounds and may occasionally weigh up to 60 pounds; is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.

  • Contribution made by Unit member only with no employer contribution.

CalPERS Retirement Formula (Eligible Unit Members)

  • 3%@60 Formula – Employees hired before May 6, 2011.
  • 2%@55 Formula – Classic Members hired on or after May 6, 2011.
  • 2%@62 Formula – New Members hired on or after January 1, 2013.

Other

  • Employees pay the full Employee Member Contribution on a pre-tax basis.
  • 1959 Survivors Program - level 4

Medical Insurance (Eligible Unit Members)

  • The City contracts with CalPERS for medical benefits, which offers employees a choice of various HMOs and PPOs.
  • The City shall pay the required monthly minimum of $143.00 towards the monthly health insurance premium.
  • For unit members who have eight (8) years or more of consecutive service with the City and currently working 1,000 hours or more per fiscal year, the City provides an optional benefits package (medical and vision) and, effective May 26, 2016, the City provides an additional $314.00 per month to be used towards these optional benefits for employee and eligible dependents.

Sick Leave

  • Paid sick leave shall accrue at the rate of one (1) hour for each 30 hours worked to a maximum of 24 hours per year.
  • Unit members shall be entitled to use accrued paid sick time beginning on the 90th day of employment, defined as sick leave accrual and usage.
  • Paid sick leave shall be taken in increments of not less than one (1) hour.

Holiday Pay (Unit members will receive holiday pay only if they are scheduled to work during the pay period in which the holiday falls).

Effective calendar year 2012, unit members will receive five (5) hours of holiday pay for each of the following holidays:

  • New Year's Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day.
