What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tourism - Part-Time Travel Advisor position at Carroll County, VA?
Hourly Rate: $14.00
This part-time, in-person role performs administrative support work, greeting visitors, providing area information, suggesting local attractions, assisting with special events, and supporting tourism initiatives. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Tourism Director and helps advance the branding and visitor engagement goals of Carroll County Tourism.
Essential Functions:
- Greet visitors warmly and assist with travel planning, directions, and regional recommendations
- Suggest local attractions, events, outdoor recreation areas, and hidden gems
- Maintain a strong working knowledge of the area’s geography, assets, and current happenings
- Answer questions related to travel, tourism, history, and Appalachian culture
- Maintain inventory of brochures and materials; stock displays and assist with fulfillment mailings
- Keep daily records of visitor counts and general center activity
- Answer phone calls and provide assistance as needed
- Promote the Heart of the Blue Ridge campaign through visitor engagement and storytelling
- Support social media content creation and scheduling aligned with tourism campaigns
- Assist with local event research, vendor outreach, and promotional coordination
- Support the planning and implementation of community events hosted at or near the Visitor Center
- Collaborate with the Tourism Director and Marketing Coordinator on special projects
Physical Requirements:
- Occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force
- May require standing or walking for extended periods
- Requires the ability to speak and hear clearly, and use hands for handling or operating materials
- Standard visual requirements to observe surroundings and materials
- Work is generally performed in a moderately noisy visitor center environment

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- General knowledge of Carroll County’s attractions, geography, events, and tourism resources
- Ability to read and interpret maps, brochures, and digital navigation tools
- Strong interpersonal communication skills and a customer-first attitude
- Proficiency in using office technology, tablets, and social media platforms
- Ability to effectively direct people to destinations and provide reliable local insights
- Capable of working both independently and collaboratively in a team setting
- Detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable multitasking in a visitor-centered environment
- Interest in Appalachian culture, rural tourism, and local economic development
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED
- Experience in tourism, hospitality, public service, or community engagement preferred
- Event planning or marketing experience is a plus
Special Requirements:
- Must be available to work Saturdays
