Part-time EMT

SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE

A Carroll County EMT provides emergency medical care and transportation to individuals who are sick or injured. Working as part of a county emergency medical services (EMS) system, the EMT responds to 911 calls, delivers pre-hospital care, and ensures safe transport to medical facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

This class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive. Incumbent(s) may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skills.

● Provides basic and advanced life support to ill or injured patients.

● Assess nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed or need for additional assistance.

● Restore and stabilize heart rhythm on pulseless, non-breathing patients.

● Place a Supraglottic Airway to secure BLS airways and ventilate patients in accordance with departmental medical protocols.

● Administer injections of medications.

● Administer initial treatment at emergency scenes including gathering and recording patient’s vital signs.

● Assist in extricating trapped victims and transporting sick and injured persons to an appropriate health care facility.

● In accordance with KRS and KAR regarding emergency medical services, completes paperwork and electronic healthcare records on patients encountered.

● Safely operates ambulances and other emergency response vehicles.

● Communicate clearly and concisely to physicians and other healthcare providers both in person and via radio/telephone.

● Assure all equipment and supplies are present on the assigned apparatus, as outlined by department guidelines.

● Keep quarters and vehicles disinfected, clean, and organized.

● Attend mandatory training sessions and staff meetings.

● Assist with disaster response, public events, and community emergencies.

● Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and Experience:

• High School graduate or GED equivalent required.
• Current EMT or Advanced EMT certification is required.
• Must have a valid driver's license.
• Maintain CPR healthcare provider certification.
• Maintain PHTLS certification once obtained.
• Maintain AMLS certification once obtained.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

● Thorough knowledge of the proper operation of the local EMS and Kentucky State EMS protocol.

● Thorough knowledge of EMS policies and procedures as well as County policies.

● Strong patient assessment and critical-thinking skills.

● Ability to remain calm in high-stress situations.

● Compassionate communication with patients and families.

● Physical stamina for lifting and prolonged standing.

● Teamwork and professional.

● Must have a strong work ethic.

• Mobility to work in typical office setting and use standard office equipment.
• Sitting in vehicles operating on rough roads and on rough surfaces.
• Walking on uneven and slippery surfaces for brief periods.
• Strength to lift and carry individuals weighing in excess of 50 pounds.
• Visual acuity sufficient to operate equipment in a variety of lighting conditions, including bright light, low light, and low visibility conditions; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate over telephone and radio.
• Work is subject to performance in both indoor and outdoor environments; outside work occurs on a frequent basis and requires exposure to dust, fumes, or high noise levels and extreme weather conditions, and frequent travel.
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, and on-call work required for emergencies and public events.
