Job Description: Utilities Laborer
Position Summary
The Utilities Laborer assists utility construction crews in the installation, maintenance, and repair of underground utility systems. This position performs manual labor in support of water, sewer, storm drainage, and related utility projects while maintaining a safe, productive, and quality-focused work environment. The Utilities Laborer works under the direction of the Foreman and Equipment Operators to ensure projects are completed safely and efficiently.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with the installation of underground utility systems, including pipe placement, manhole placement, trenching, and job site restoration.
- Assemble and stage materials on the ground for installation to support efficient project operations.
- Support pipe preparation, layout, alignment, setting, and placement under the direction of the Crew Leader.
- Hand-dig trenches and safely backfill excavations as directed.
- Load, unload, transport, and organize construction materials, tools, and equipment.
- Operate basic hand tools and power tools in a safe and efficient manner.
- Set up, maintain, and remove traffic control devices, barricades, and work zone safety equipment.
- Clear brush, debris, vegetation, and other obstacles to prepare and maintain safe work sites.
- Assist equipment operators and other crew members during excavation, installation, and restoration activities.
- Perform general labor tasks including grading, tamping, cleanup, and restoration of disturbed areas.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site throughout the workday.
- Inspect tools and equipment before use and report any damaged or unsafe equipment.
- Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and applicable utility construction standards.
- Wear and properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Communicate effectively with crew members and supervisors to support efficient workflow.
- Perform emergency repairs or respond to after-hours work assignments when required.
- Perform other duties related to utility line construction as assigned by the Crew Leader or Supervisor.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in underground utility construction, general construction, or related labor work is preferred but not required.
- Ability to safely use hand tools and basic power tools.
- Ability to obtain additional certifications as required by the company.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform strenuous manual labor for extended periods.

- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and work in trenches and on uneven terrain.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and humidity.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, reflective vest, hearing protection, and steel-toe boots.
Work Environment
This position is performed primarily outdoors on active construction sites around heavy equipment, excavations, underground utilities, and moving traffic. The Utilities Laborer must adhere to all company safety policies and procedures while working in physically demanding conditions and varying weather environments.
