Certified Medical Assistant

Position Summary

Supports providers and patients through safe, efficient clinical rooming, documentation, procedure assistance, patient communication, and coordination of care within the employee’s training, competency, and authorized scope.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare examination rooms, equipment, and supplies and maintain a clean, safe, and well-stocked clinical environment.
• Room patients; verify identity, reason for visit, medication and allergy information, and other required clinical information.
• Measure and document vital signs and relevant patient information accurately in the electronic health record.
• Assist providers with examinations, procedures, injections, casting or splinting, wound care, and other tasks within demonstrated competency and authorized scope.
• Prepare medications and supplies as directed and document medication-related activities in accordance with policy; do not independently diagnose, prescribe, or provide unauthorized clinical advice.
• Process provider orders, referrals, prescriptions, test results, durable medical equipment, forms, and patient messages as assigned.
• Provide approved patient education and instructions and refer questions beyond role scope to licensed clinical personnel.
• Follow infection-prevention, sterilization, sharps, medication, specimen, and hazardous-material procedures.
• Respond appropriately to emergencies and maintain required BLS certification.
• Support clinical flow, communicate delays or safety concerns, and coordinate with front-office and ancillary teams.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA, OSHA, and applicable scope-of-practice requirements.
• Perform other duties reasonably related to the position as assigned. Responsibilities may be modified to meet operational, regulatory, or patient-care needs.

Education and Experience

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of an accredited or employer-approved medical assisting program preferred.
• Experience/Credentials: Current CMA, RMA, CCMA, or comparable credential preferred. Current BLS certification required or must be obtained within the employer-designated period. Orthopedic or ambulatory-care experience preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

• Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and assisting patients. Must be able to lift or move up to 35 pounds independently and greater weights with assistance or appropriate equipment. Potential exposure to blood, body fluids, sharps, medications, and infectious materials.
