Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Ophthalmic Assistant to join our healthcare team. The ideal candidate will support ophthalmologists in providing exceptional patient care, assist with clinical procedures, and manage medical records efficiently. This role offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic ophthalmology clinic, contributing to patient health and vision care. The position requires strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and a solid understanding of medical terminology and anatomy related to eye health.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients and assist with intake procedures, including collecting medical histories and updating records
  • Measure vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen saturation levels
  • Prepare patients for examinations by performing initial assessments and explaining procedures
  • Assist ophthalmologists during examinations and minor procedures, ensuring aseptic techniques are maintained
  • Operate EMR systems such as NextGen and other electronic medical record (EMR) platforms to document patient information accurately
  • Manage medical records in compliance with HIPAA regulations, ensuring confidentiality and security of patient data
  • Conduct basic eye tests and assist with optical measurements for eyewear fitting
  • Support front desk operations including scheduling appointments, verifying insurance information, and handling patient inquiries
  • Engage in retail sales of eyewear products when appropriate, applying retail math skills for transactions
  • Maintain a clean and organized clinical environment adhering to safety protocols and aseptic techniques
  • Collaborate with team members on patient care plans, including pediatrics or specialized cases such as ophthalmology or clinic-specific needs

Requirements

  • Prior experience in medical office settings or ophthalmology clinics preferred
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology related to the eye, and medical coding/billing processes
  • Familiarity with EMR systems such as NextGen or similar platforms
  • Strong understanding of HIPAA regulations and patient confidentiality standards
  • Experience with patient care procedures including intake assessments and vital signs measurement
  • Ability to perform clinical tasks requiring aseptic technique and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with patients and team members
  • Retail sales experience or familiarity with retail math is a plus
  • Knowledge of medical records management and front desk operations is desirable
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining professionalism and compassion for patients
