Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama is seeking applicants for a full-time, fixed-term Lighting Technician. The position will begin in late August 2024, and end 31 May 2025. This is a dynamic opportunity for someone who thrives in a creative and fast-paced work environment. This person will contribute to the department by providing essential support for physical production and events as well as helping to maintain lighting equipment and infrastructure.

Core responsibilities will include:

  • Engineering theatrical lighting plots to prepare for installation in a theater
  • Supervising the installation of theatrical lighting plots in a theater
  • Mentoring students in the process of installing theatrical lighting plots in a theater
  • Engineering and construction of practical electrical devices for use in theatrical production
  • Maintaining entertainment lighting equipment and facilities
  • Other duties as assigned

The work of a Lighting Technician often involves a need to work at heights greater than 30’, use of a ladder or personnel lift, the lifting and/or carrying of awkward and/or heavy objects and the manipulation of hand tools and equipment in small or confined spaces for short periods of time. While the ability to perform these tasks is not necessary to fulfill the primary goal of this position, if these scenarios present themselves the Lighting Technician will need to be able to find alternative means of completing the tasks involved.

Qualifications:

  • Two years’ experience as a lighting technician in the entertainment industry
  • Experience as head lighting technician on at least three theatrical productions
  • Knowledge of and experience in maintaining entertainment lighting equipment, including automated lighting fixtures
  • Experience with electrical wiring and soldering techniques
  • Experience programming theatrical lighting control consoles (ETC Eos Family preferred)

A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
