Overview: In partnership with the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), the Future Music Project (FMP) provides after-school workshops from September - June in a variety of juvenile justice settings across four ACS sites in New York City: Passages Academy - Bronx Hope, Passages Academy - Belmont, Crossroads, and Horizon. FMP creates a space for young people to develop as artists, critical thinkers, and collaborators through the use of songwriting and music as a creative outlet. Songwriting and Digital Music Production serve as a jumping off point to explore various topics such as civic engagement, advocacy, personal growth and career development. Workshops typically operate during afterschool hours (2pm – 7pm) and run approximately 1.5-2hr. FMP Teaching Artist Role & Responsibilities FMP Teaching Artists are expected to support young people in creating, producing, and performing songs that express what’s important to them and where they want to go in the world. Teaching Artists guide program participants through the creative process while encouraging critical thinking, supporting healthy decision making and emphasizing self-worth. Teaching Artists also work to build and maintain a sense of community with the participants and staff people in their workshop(s). FMP Teaching Artists are responsible for: Co-designing a culturally responsive curriculum with FMP Faculty and Carnegie Hall staff, anchored in creative youth development practices, WMI Core Values, and FMP Community Guidelines Facilitating curriculum in FMP music-based workshops, field trips, recording sessions, rehearsals, performances and other FMP activities. Committing to a schedule. FMP Teaching Artists facilitate workshops weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly (between 1 - 1.5 hrs) based on songwriting principles that explore a variety of topics Regularly engaging in lesson planning with Co-Teachers and reflecting critically on programming and teaching practice with co-faculty and Carnegie Hall staff, including soliciting and implementing feedback from young people and partner staff Guiding young people through creative processes that encourage critical thinking, support healthy decision making, and emphasize self-worth Participating in program evaluation efforts, including surveying young people and ACS staff and documenting workshop process Collaborating with ACS staff in program development and implementation and communicating regularly with young people, ACS staff, and program managers around scheduling, logistics, planning, and program updates. Attending training and professional development sessions Criteria to Apply: The ideal candidate for this role exhibits all of the following: Commitment to furthering the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of the work At least 3-5 years prior of experience as a teaching artist, teacher, educator or facilitator working with young people (12 – 21 years old) Experience in creative youth development, social justice pedagogy, and curriculum development Technical Proficiency in one or more DAWs (Pro Tools, Cubase, Ableton, Logic Pro, FL Studio) with the ability to record a simple demo including: recorded vocals and musical elements Consistent and clear communication skills Willingness to work collaboratively with various stakeholders High level of flexibility and openness to developing the workshop(s) with young people and ACS staff Exhibiting flexibility, attention to detail and be open to guidance from Program Staff and assisting with the production of FMP programs as needed Ability to speak another language fluently is a plus Experience working with young people in juvenile justice settings or other NYC agency-run settings preferred Compensation FMP Teaching Artists will be compensated at $160 - $320/workshop. Additional compensation will be offered for involvement in event organizing and professional development seminars.
