PRIMARY FUNCTION
The Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) is a dynamic, school-based leadership role designed to support both educator growth and student success. Working in close collaboration with the principal, the TOSA serves as a bridge between instructional leadership and school culture, fulfilling responsibilities across four key areas: instructional coaching, student leadership and activities, academic enrichment, and school administration support. This position requires a skilled educator who is equally comfortable mentoring colleagues, leading student programs, and stepping into school leadership roles as needed. This position offers a unique opportunity for an experienced educator to expand their professional impact — supporting colleagues as an instructional leader while continuing to work directly with students and contribute to a vibrant school community. An administrative credential is preferred.

Key Responsibilities
I. Instructional Coaching & Professional Development - The TOSA acts as an on-site instructional coach, providing individualized and collaborative support to classroom teachers. Specific duties include:
* Partnering with teachers to design and refine lesson plans aligned with curriculum standards and best practices
* Supporting curriculum development and the creation of high-quality instructional materials
* Providing constructive, evidence-based feedback on instructional strategies and classroom management techniques
* Conducting classroom observations and follow-up coaching conversations to support continuous professional growth
* Collaborating with the principal to plan, organize, and facilitate meaningful professional development opportunities for the school staff
* Overseeing and coordinating state testing
II. Student Leadership & School Culture Programs - The TOSA oversees a portfolio of student-centered programs that build leadership skills, community responsibility, and positive character. Responsibilities include:
* Advising and facilitating the Student Council, guiding student leaders in planning and executing school initiatives
* Leading the Green Team, the student group responsible for managing and promoting the school's recycling and composting program
* Organizing and running engaging student activities and events during the lunch period
* Coordinating the Character Counts Program in collaboration with grade-level teams, including planning and producing six schoolwide character assemblies throughout the year
III. Academic Enrichment - The TOSA designs and teaches advanced learning opportunities for students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. This includes:
* Developing grade-appropriate enrichment activities and challenge problems that extend learning beyond the standard curriculum
* Fostering a love of mathematical thinking and problem-solving in a supportive, engaging environment
* Differentiating content to meet the advanced needs of students at each grade level
IV. Administrative Support & Student Services - The TOSA plays an integral role in school operations and student well-being, including:
* Facilitating Student Success Team (SST) meetings, coordinating participants, documentation, and follow-up actions to support students with academic or behavioral concerns
* Assisting with student discipline, providing guidance and intervention in partnership with the principal
* Serving as Principal in Charge in the absence of the principal, exercising sound judgment to manage day-to-day school operations and respond to emerging situations
* Stepping into other leadership roles as necessary.
