Role Description
The Director of College Counseling is responsible for developing, establishing, and maintaining a sequential developmental program of college and career counseling curriculum for all students freshmen through seniors and their parents, serves as a resource and reference on college counseling topics for school counselors, teachers and administrators, and acts as a liaison between Carmel and the collegiate community.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in School Counseling or related field preferred
- Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with a School Counselor Endorsement and certification registered with Lake County ROE preferred
- Experience working within college admissions preferred
- Experience working with adolescents
- Experience with MaiaLearning (College/Career Database) preferred
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Express good judgment and ability to build and maintain the confidentiality of students, families, and colleagues, as well as respect sensitive information
- Ability to work independently and within a team
- Possess strong oral and written communication skills and organizational skills
- Ability to work with students and adults in a positive manner
- Ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions
- Possess common sense, problem-solving skills, and reasoning ability to deal with difficult situations appropriately

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develops and implements a 4-year college counseling curriculum for freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, which includes MAIA
- Implement college counseling curriculum to facilitate appropriate academic planning in high school to achieve postsecondary goals
- Maintain a four-year program of career and college investigation and planning using Maia Learning
- Provide programming, guidance, and assistance with college essay writing, college applications, and teacher recommendation letters
- Assist students and families with the college process, including search, college visits, applications, financial aid, scholarships, career exploration, and selection
- Conduct individualized college planning meetings with students and parents, from freshmen through senior years
- Facilitate College Information Nights on various topics
- Partner with the Admissions team on methods of educating incoming families on the college process
- Enhance communication to Carmel families regarding the college process via social media
- Interpret and analyze students' assessment data, including ACT and SAT, for college entrance
- Scholarship Coordinator
- Serve as a resource to counselors on all stages of postsecondary counseling
- Develop and actively participate in professional development programs to help keep the counselors apprised of trends in college and career counseling
- Informs administration of curricular trends on the collegiate level, and changes in the college athletic eligibility
- Provide postsecondary information and resources to faculty when requested
- Provides professional development and consultation when writing letters of recommendation
- Serve as the liaison between Carmel and the post-secondary community
- Invite and schedule representatives of the collegiate community to visit with Carmel students
- Meet with the college admission representatives to gather information about their school's academic programs, admission, and financial aid procedures and student activities
- Actively participate in local college fairs and publicize these activities to students and parents
- Participates in campus visitation and articulation programs to gain firsthand experience of specific college campuses
- Articulates Carmel's academic program and excellence with admission representatives
- Actively participates in professional organizations and activities to further enhance not only knowledge of the college admission process, but also the professional visibility of Carmel Catholic High School. (NACAC and IACAC)
- Perform other duties/tasks as assigned
The Director of College Counseling is a ten-month position, with an additional 9 days of summer duty. Attendance is required from 7:30 A.M. until 3:30 P. M. In addition, attendance is required at the following evening and weekend events: Parent Orientation nights, Back to School Night, Open House, Parent Teacher Conferences, College Information Nights, Financial Aid Night, Street Scenes, Freshmen Welcome Night, ACT District Test Day, Graduation, and summer Taking Care of Business Days. Chaperoning at least one activity is required.
