Class Title: Lifeguard
Department: Parks and Recreation
Location: Carlisle Community Pool, 1236 Franklin Street
GENERAL PURPOSE
Insures the safety of all pool patrons and protect lives while maintaining order in a municipal pool setting.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Recreation/Pool Manager, Assistant Pool Manager and Head Lifeguard.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prevent injuries by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors.
- Enforce facility rules and regulations and educate patrons about them.
- Recognize and respond quickly and effectively to all emergencies.
- Utilize whistle codes, hand signals and Emergency Action Plan.
- Inspect the facility on a daily basis and report any unsafe or hazardous conditions such as; fecal matter in the pool, equipment in improper working order, body fluid spills, etc. to the Manager on Duty immediately.
- Collect and dispose of trash in and around the pool, rec area, bathhouse and parking lots.
- Empty trash receptacles.
- Clean the bathhouse including but not limited to the following tasks; stock paper goods, clean toilets, sinks and showers, vacuum and mop floors.
- Attend all staff meetings.
- Attend and participate in all staff trainings and drills.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES
- Ensure a friendly, professional, customer-service oriented environment for all pool patrons.
- Complete and submit required records and reports for all accidents and incidents.
- Respond to public inquiries about the Carlisle Community Pool and related aquatic programs.
- Assist in vacuuming, brushing and maintaining cleanliness of pool.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates the knowledge and experience to perform the work.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- A. Ability to effectively enforce safety and health regulations.
- B. Ability to withstand prolonged periods in the sun and prolonged periods in a seated position.
- C. Ability to communicate with the public using whistles, hand signals, and verbal commands.
- D. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, participants, instructors, and the general public
- E. Ability to act quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.
- F. Ability to effectively teach swimming lessons.
- G. Ability to arrive to work on time and be ready to begin work at the start of their shift.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
- Current Lifeguard Training.
- WSI, Water Safety Instructor (preferred but not required).
- Valid Child Abuse Clearance (need prior to first day of work).
- Valid Criminal Background Clearance (need prior to first day of work).
- Valid FBI Fingerprint Clearance (need prior to first day of work).
- Child Protective Services Disclosure Statement for Provisional Employment.
- Mandated Reporter Training certificate (current within 5 years).
- Clearances from other employers or are valid for 5 years after date of completion.
- Ability to swim 500 yards per week.
