Thrift Store Cashier/ Store Assistant Volunteer

Job Summary:

The Cashier/Store Assistant is responsible for providing excellent customer service and assisting with the daily operations of the Thrift Store. This position operates the cash register, assists customers, accepts and processes donated merchandise, sorts and prices items, stocks the sales floor, and maintains a clean, organized, and welcoming store environment.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Previous retail, cahier, thrift store, customer service, or related experience preferred.
• Ability to accurately handle cash and operate a cash register.
• Strong customer service and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively with customers, coworkers, volunteers, and members of the public.
• Good organizational and time-management skills.
• Ability to identify merchandise that is damaged, defective, or unsuitable for sale.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Dependable, punctual, and professional.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift throughout the workday.
• Ability to lift and carry merchandise and donations as required.
• Retail or thrift store experience
• Knowledge of clothing, household goods, furniture, or other commonly donated merchandise.
• Ability to determine appropriate pricing based on condition, quality, and store guidelines.
• Ability to work effectively with volunteers.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

• Greet customers and provide friendly, professional, and helpful customer service.
• Operate the cash register and accurately process cash, credit/debit cards, and other approved forms of payment.
• Accurately count cash, provide correct change, and maintain an appropriate cash drawer.
• Follow all cash-handling and loss prevention procedures.
• Answer customer questions regarding merchandise, pricing, store policies, and sales.
• Receive donations from the public in a courteous and professional manner.
• Sort donated merchandise according to store guidelines and condition.
• Inspect donated items to determine whether they are suitable for resale.
• Process and tag clothing, household goods, furniture, books, accessories, and other donated merchandise.
• Prepare merchandise for display and sale.
• Stock and rotate merchandise on the sales floor.
• Maintain organized, clean, and attractive displays and merchandise area.
• Assist customers with locating merchandise and, when appropriate, moving or carrying larger items.
• Keep checkout areas, sales floors, donation areas, and other assigned areas clean and organized.
• Assist with organizing, cleaning, and preparing donated merchandise.
• Identify damaged, unsafe, or unsuitable merchandise and dispose of or handle it according to store procedures.
• Assist with receiving and organizing donations designated areas.
• Assist with store opening and closing procedures.
• Replenish merchandise and maintain appropriate inventory levels on the sales floor.
• Monitor the sales floor and report safety, security, or maintenance concerns to the Store Manager.
• Handle customer concerns professionally and refer complaints or issues to management when necessary.
• Work cooperatively with other staff and volunteers to support efficient store operations.
• Follow all organizational policies, procedures, safety requirements, and store guidelines.
• Perform other duties as assigned
