This role will focus primarily on labor & employment matters, while also contributing to litigation and claims management as well as broader regulatory compliance efforts.

This is an exciting opportunity for a thoughtful, business-minded attorney who enjoys solving complex problems, partnering closely with stakeholders, and delivering practical legal guidance that drives smart decision-making. You will play a meaningful role in supporting our People & Talent organization and helping CarGurus navigate an evolving legal landscape with confidence and integrity.

What you'll do

  • Provide day-to-day legal advice on labor & employment matters, including hiring, discipline, performance management, terminations, leaves of absence, accommodations, and employee relations issues.
  • Advise on compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws (e.g., wage and hour, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, leave laws).
  • Deliver clear, practical, and timely legal advice to senior leaders within the People & Talent organization, demonstrating sound judgment, confidence, and the ability to translate complex legal concepts into actionable business guidance.
  • Draft, review, and update employment-related documents, including offer letters, employment agreements, separation agreements, policies, and handbooks.
  • Partner closely with the People & Talent team on investigations, policy interpretation, and risk mitigation.
  • Support employment-related aspects of corporate initiatives, including reorganizations and M&A activity.
  • Monitor legal developments and help implement practical compliance strategies and training.
  • Strategic management of employment and commercial litigation, including coordinating with outside counsel.
  • Conduct early case assessments to determine risk and drive cost-effective resolutions.
  • Support discovery, document preservation, internal fact investigations, and case strategy.
  • Conduct active oversight of legal spend and outside counsel efficiency.
  • Support responses to government inquiries and subpoenas.
  • Monitor relevant law and regulations to enable a proactive compliance posture.

What you'll bring

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 3-5 years of relevant labor & employment experience, including experience advising business clients and managing employment-related disputes.
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Experience supporting or managing litigation matters.
  • Prior in-house experience at a technology company or within a high-growth, fast-paced environment is a plus.
