The Role
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the General Counsel will serve as the company’s senior-most legal executive and a key member of the leadership team. This role is accountable for defining and executing the organization’s legal strategy, overseeing enterprise risk management, and ensuring strong governance across a multi-state platform.
The General Counsel will operate as a strategic advisor; providing clear, business-oriented counsel that supports growth while appropriately managing risk. This individual will play a central role in the company’s continued expansion, with significant involvement in mergers and acquisitions, operational scale, and cross-functional decision-making. The role requires a leader who is equally comfortable shaping strategy and engaging directly in execution.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead all legal aspects of mergers and acquisitions, including structuring, diligence, negotiation, and closing, in partnership with Business Development and Finance
- Advise executive leadership on legal, regulatory, and strategic matters, ensuring alignment with business objectives
- Oversee the drafting, negotiation, and execution of complex agreements, including acquisition, employment, commercial, and real estate contracts
- Partner across Revenue, Operations, People & Culture, and Finance to support enterprise-wide initiatives and decision-making
- Establish and maintain effective compliance programs, governance frameworks, and internal policies across a multi-state organization
- Identify and manage legal, regulatory, and operational risks, proactively advising on mitigation strategies
- Continue strategic legal work, including processes, systems, and legal operations capabilities
- Manage external counsel relationships, ensuring high-quality support and effective resource utilization
- Work with People & Culture on internal investigations and manage sensitive or high-risk matters
- Lead, mentor, and develop legal Team Members, fostering a high-performing and collaborative environment
- J.D. from an accredited law school with active bar membership in good standing (Missouri admission required or ability to obtain)
- 12 years of legal experience, including significant corporate, transactional, and commercial law exposure
- Demonstrated experience leading or supporting complex M&A transactions and commercial negotiations
- Prior in-house experience and experience advising senior leadership strongly preferred
- Track record of operating effectively in high-growth, multi-entity, or private equity-backed environments
- Proven ability to balance legal risk with business priorities in a practical, solutions-oriented manner
- Experience building or scaling legal functions, processes, and infrastructure
- Strong executive presence, with the ability to influence and communicate effectively at all levels
- Ability to operate both strategically and tactically in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
