The Simulation Software Engineer provides software engineering support to the Simulation Engineering Branch (Code 580) at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center under the Engineering and Technical Support Services (ETSS) contract.

This position supports the design and implementation of software used in real-time simulations and simulation of research aircraft, including aerodynamics, flight controls, and flight systems. The work focuses on the development and testing of six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) simulations of research aircraft, encompassing both software-in-the-loop (SIL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation environments.

The engineer will participate in ground test and flight support as required by the project, prepare design documentation and interface control documents, and integrate automated tools developed for simulation. The engineer will also assist in the development and review of test plans, procedures, and related documentation, and perform verification and validation (V&V) activities.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design and implement software used in real-time simulations of research aircraft, including aerodynamics, flight controls, and flight systems models.
  • Develop and test six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) simulations of research aircraft, including both software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop configurations.
  • Prepare design documentation, interface control documents (ICDs), and related engineering artifacts.
  • Integrate automated tools developed for simulation into the simulation environment.
  • Assist in the development and review of test plans, test procedures, and related documentation.
  • Perform verification and validation (V&V) activities on simulation software and integrated systems.
  • Participate in ground test and flight support activities as required by the project.
  • Collaborate with simulation, flight controls, and flight systems engineers across multidisciplinary project teams.

  • Experience developing multi-threaded applications and parallel processing software.
  • Proficiency with scripting languages.
  • Experience with Java GUI and code development.
  • U.S. Citizenship required (NASA facility access).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Embedded systems development experience.
  • Simulink programming experience.
  • Experience supporting NASA or DoD flight simulation, ground test, or flight test programs.
  • Familiarity with simulation of piloted and unmanned research aircraft.

Key Benefits and Impact

  • Directly support NASA Armstrong's real-time simulation capability for current and next-generation research aircraft.
  • Develop simulation software that underpins flight controls research, pilot-in-the-loop evaluations, and flight test readiness.
  • Collaborate with NASA engineers, test pilots, and researchers on high-visibility flight research programs.
  • Apply senior-level software expertise across the full simulation lifecycle—from design and implementation through verification, validation, and flight support.
Job Requirements
