Overview:
- The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) plays a key role in supporting the Specimen Processing Department by ensuring the accurate and timely handling of laboratory specimens.
- This role involves various essential tasks such as specimen sorting, data entry, centrifugation, aliquoting, and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory.
- The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, production-based environment.
- Accuracy, flexibility, and adherence to safety and compliance standards are critical to success in this position.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform specimen processing duties including A-station, presort, centrifugation, aliquoting, and delivery of processed specimens.
- Enter patient and test information accurately and efficiently (6,000 keystrokes/hour).
- Ensure proper specimen labeling and handling according to established procedures.
- Maintain quality and productivity standards while meeting departmental completion times.
- Communicate effectively with laboratory staff, couriers, and other departments.
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace while adhering to all safety and compliance policies.
- Demonstrate flexibility to adapt to workflow changes, shifting priorities, and customer demands.
- Handle biohazard materials safely while practicing good laboratory safety habits.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience:
- No prior laboratory experience required; training provided.
- Prior experience in a clinical, production, or data entry environment preferred.
- Familiarity with medical terminology or laboratory processes is a plus.
Skills:
- Strong data entry accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Good organizational, communication, and multitasking skills.
- Comfortable working in a biohazard environment and standing or sitting for extended periods.
- Flexibility to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
