Basic Purpose:
This position is responsible for providing technical oversight and supervision of non-exempt laboratory personnel across multiple shifts. The role directs activities and workflow within the designated area, considering coordination with other laboratory areas and interdepartmental needs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate proficiency in all principal duties of a Forensic Scientist I, II, and III, as well as those of a group lead.
- Oversee staff and departmental activities, distribute and assign work, determine priorities, and schedule non-routine procedures.
- Perform personnel-related functions including hiring, training, continuing education, disciplinary action, terminations, and resolving work-related problems. Conduct performance appraisals as required.
- Initiate quality-control measures and monitor the quality of work to ensure adherence to laboratory standards.
- Perform duties of forensic scientists as needed to cover absences or peak workloads.
- Plan and implement new instruments, methods, corrective actions, and SOP updates.
- Prepare staff for Federal, CAP, and State inspections.
- Manage the department’s annual competency testing process and documentation.
- Interact professionally with inter-departmental teams and groups. Participate in leadership meetings with laboratory management.
- Maintain frequent communication across all shifts with department staff.
- Perform other duties as directed by managers, directors, and/or Responsible Parties (RPs).
Education Required:
- Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in Medical Technology, Biological Science, or a related field.
- BS/BA degrees in non-related fields must include a minimum of sixteen (16) semester hours in Chemistry, sixteen (16) semester hours in Biology, and three (3) semester hours of Mathematics, or as required by applicable regulations.
Work Experience:
- Six (6) years of experience for Medical Technologists (MT) or seven (7) years for BS/BA degree holders.
- One (1) year of experience in a SAMHSA-certified laboratory.
- Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Ability to perform routine and repetitive motions, such as pipetting.
- Ability to stand or sit for extended periods.
Other Requirements:
- Experience in a SAMHSA-certified laboratory.
- Ability to establish work priorities for self and others, managing several procedures simultaneously, including troubleshooting instruments and other issues.
- Ability to schedule and manage resources to meet departmental goals.
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers within and outside the department.
- Ability to communicate professionally with clients and provide high-quality customer service.
- Required to maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
