Career Rehabilitation Building Services (CRB) is dedicated to supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in living meaningful, independent lives within their communities. Our team works to promote dignity, independence, and personal growth while providing high-quality support services. We are seeking compassionate and dependable Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) to join our team.

Position Summary

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides person-centered support to individuals with disabilities and assists them in achieving greater independence, confidence, and participation in their homes, communities, and workplaces. DSPs work directly with individuals to support daily living skills, community involvement, personal goals, social development, and employment-related needs.

This position may include providing Home & Community Services, Companion Care Services, Job Coaching, or other services depending on the individual's needs and service plan. The DSP is responsible for providing respectful, dependable, and individualized support while promoting the individual's choice, independence, dignity, and overall quality of life.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Home & Community Services

  • Provide individualized support in the individual's home and community based on their service plan and personal goals.
  • Assist individuals with developing and maintaining daily living and independent living skills.
  • Support individuals with household tasks, organization, meal preparation, shopping, errands, and other appropriate daily activities.
  • Assist individuals in accessing and participating in community activities, recreational opportunities, appointments, and social events.
  • Encourage individuals to make choices and develop skills that increase independence.
  • Promote safety and follow all applicable health, safety, and emergency procedures.
  • Provide transportation or transportation support when authorized and appropriate.

Companion Care Services

  • Provide companionship and meaningful social interaction.
  • Participate in activities that are enjoyable and appropriate to the individual's interests and abilities.
  • Encourage socialization, communication, and community involvement.
  • Assist with maintaining routines and engaging in meaningful activities.
  • Provide supervision and support as outlined in the individual's service plan.
  • Build a professional, supportive relationship while maintaining appropriate boundaries.

Job Coaching & Employment Support

  • Provide on-site and community-based support to individuals at their place of employment.
  • Assist individuals with learning job duties, workplace routines, and appropriate workplace behaviors.
  • Demonstrate tasks and provide hands-on or verbal instruction when appropriate.
  • Support individuals in developing independence and gradually reducing reliance on job coaching when possible.
  • Encourage positive relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and other workplace personnel.
  • Assist individuals with maintaining punctuality, attendance, communication, and appropriate workplace conduct.
  • Identify barriers to successful employment and communicate concerns to the appropriate supervisor or employment services staff.
  • Support individuals in achieving and maintaining their employment goals.

Documentation & Communication

  • Complete accurate and timely service documentation, case notes, timesheets, and other required forms.
  • Document services provided, progress toward goals, community activities, and significant events as required.
  • Communicate changes in an individual's needs, behavior, safety, health, employment, or overall well-being to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Maintain confidentiality and protect the individual's privacy.
  • Attend required meetings, trainings, mentoring sessions, and supervisory meetings.
  • Follow all company policies, procedures, service plans, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Person-Centered Support

The DSP is expected to:

  • Treat every individual with dignity, respect, and professionalism.
  • Promote independence rather than creating unnecessary dependence.
  • Respect individual choice, preferences, rights, and personal goals.
  • Encourage individuals to make their own decisions whenever possible.
  • Provide support based on the individual's abilities and needs rather than making assumptions about what they can or cannot do.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries at all times.
  • Serve as a positive role model and advocate for the individual's rights and inclusion.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for this position.
  • Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities, behavioral health needs, or in a caregiving/support role is preferred but not required.
  • Experience in employment support, job coaching, direct care, or human services is a plus.
  • Must be dependable, responsible, and able to work independently.
  • Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Must be willing to complete all required company, state, and program-specific training. All new employees are required to complete a two-week paid training program designed to provide the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience needed to be successful in the role.
  • Must successfully complete all required background checks and clearances.
  • A valid driver's license and reliable transportation is required.

Physical Requirements

The physical requirements of the position will vary based on the individual's service needs and assignment. Employees may be required to stand, walk, bend, reach, sit for extended periods, and assist with routine activities. Any lifting, transferring, physical assistance, or other physical requirements must be consistent with the individual's approved service plan and the employee's ability to safely perform the assigned duties.

Work Environment

DSPs may work in a variety of settings, including:

  • Individual homes
  • Community settings
  • Recreational and social activities
  • Community businesses and public locations
  • Employment/workplace settings
  • Company or program locations

The position may require flexible scheduling, including evenings, weekends, and varying hours depending on individual service needs. During the hiring process, you will be given the opportunity to provide your availability and preferred work schedule. Your availability will be discussed and documented prior to receiving an offer of employment.

Professional Expectations

DSPs are expected to demonstrate reliability, professionalism, good judgment, and respect in every interaction. Employees must follow the chain of command, communicate concerns promptly, maintain appropriate boundaries, and provide services in accordance with the individual's service plan and company expectations.
