Special Education Teacher – Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI)

We are currently seeking a dedicated Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) to provide specialized instruction and support to students with visual impairments in a school-based setting.

Position Summary

The Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) provides direct and consultative services to students who are blind or visually impaired, helping them access the educational curriculum and develop the skills necessary for academic achievement, independence, and lifelong success. The TVI collaborates with general education teachers, special education staff, families, and related service providers to implement individualized educational programs (IEPs) and specialized instructional strategies.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide direct instruction to students with visual impairments in individual and small-group settings.
  • Assess student needs and develop instructional plans aligned with IEP goals.
  • Teach compensatory skills, including braille literacy, assistive technology, orientation concepts, social interaction skills, and independent living skills.
  • Adapt and modify instructional materials to ensure accessibility.
  • Conduct functional vision assessments and learning media assessments as appropriate.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and maintain accurate documentation and progress reports.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and district special education regulations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • Valid New Mexico teaching license with Blind and Visually Impaired (B-12) endorsement/license issued by the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED)
  • Ability to pass state and federal background checks and fingerprint clearance requirements
  • Previous school-based experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of braille, assistive technology, and specialized instructional methods for students with visual impairments preferred.

  • Knowledge of IDEA, IEP development, and special education compliance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage caseloads and maintain accurate documentation.
