As Director of Communications, you will help lead the development and execution of a cohesive communications strategy that reflects and advances the organization’s mission and goals. You’ll translate strategic priorities into impactful messaging, guide the organization’s public voice and brand identity, and offer insights to refine overall communications efforts. Uniquely, this role also plays a key part in shaping storytelling around organizational events, extending beyond traditional external-facing responsibilities to support dynamic, mission-aligned engagement.
Responsibilities
- Lead organization-wide communications strategy in partnership with CLO and senior leadership to ensure brand and mission alignment
- Advise leadership on messaging related to social impact, organizational change, and sector trends
- Provide strategic counsel on digital communications, emerging technologies, and innovative approaches to elevate digital presence
- Translate strategic priorities into clear, consistent messaging across all communication channels
- Represent communications in leadership discussions, offering insight on narrative strategy, audience engagement, and reputation
- Write, edit, and develop high-impact content for internal and external audiences; contribute to key communications deliverables
- Drive impact storytelling across platforms, aligning content with audience needs and organizational goals
- Oversee cross-channel content production to ensure quality, consistency, and brand alignment
- Maintain and update internal brand assets, reports, templates, and presentation materials
- Develop team-specific communications strategies that reflect diverse perspectives and advance departmental goals
- Support organizational events through communications planning and execution as part of the Learning & Events Team
- Lead integrated marketing strategies across paid, earned, shared, and owned channels
- Manage digital presence, including social media, website, and email marketing, to boost engagement and reach
- Lead media relations efforts, including strategy, story pitching, and speaker preparation
- Monitor communications performance using data and analytics; report metrics and recommend improvements
- Stay current on industry trends, inclusive practices, and policy changes; advise leadership accordingly
- Actively participate in organizational life, including DEI initiatives, staff events, and professional development
- Maintain expertise in communications trends and tools; share relevant insights with leadership
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- 7 years in communications, digital marketing, and media relations, including 3 years in a leadership role, ideally in the nonprofit or social impact sector
- Strong balance of strategic planning and hands-on content execution
- Proven success in media relations, thought leadership, and reputation management
- Experienced in leading digital strategies across social, web, and email platforms
- Proficient in using analytics to assess and improve communications effectiveness
- Skilled in managing external vendors and agency partnerships collaboratively
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills; able to communicate complex ideas clearly
- Deep commitment to social justice, equity, and community-centered work
- Demonstrated ability to integrate equity and inclusion into communications and team practices
- Strong relationship-builder with cross-functional collaboration skills
- Adaptable and effective in fast-paced, evolving environments
- Maintains discretion and professionalism with sensitive information

Compensation
- Salary: $140,000 - $150,000
