What are the responsibilities and job description for the Hull Systems Engineer position at Cardinal Engineering LLC?
Cardinal Engineering is currently seeking an engineer to provide Hull Systems engineering support to a surface ship engineering team at Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). Successful candidates will solve challenging problems related to structural systems/components. Successful candidates will coordinate with Engineering Agents, Technical Authorities, TYCOM, Program Offices, SUPSHIP Newport News, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Ship Repair Facility (SRF), and other activities to resolve technical matters. Responsibilities include providing technical support and assessing risk for technical decisions for Ship Design Managers (SDMs) and the applicable engineering manager.
Engineering degree with 3 years of experience or Engineering Technician with 10 years relevant shipboard experience consisting of Active Duty (E-7 or above) service (USN, USCG, or Merchant Marine) is required. Experience must be with one or more of the following areas of hull structures:
- Hull accesses and structure
- Superstructure and masts
- Tanks and voids
- Damage control systems
- General arrangements
- Outfitting
- Preservation and corrosion control
- Welding and non-destructive test (NDT)
- Weights and stability
- Shock hardening
- Ship survivability
Experience with a shipyard, Naval Surface/Undersea Warfare Center (NSWC/NUWC), Supervisor of Shipbuilding Command (SUPSHIP), Regional Maintenance Center (RMC), Type Commander (TYCOM), or similar organizations supporting construction, operation, maintenance, modernization, and/or repair of ship structure is required. Experience with required (experience with nuclear power ships is preferred). Candidate should have excellent technical writing skills and be able to work well with minimal supervision. Ideal candidate has prior US Navy, US Coast Guard, or Military Sealift Command engineering experience, preferably with nuclear powered ships. Experience working with NAVSEA technical authority and experience working with non-technical leadership is a plus.
Candidates will be based out of the Washington Navy Yard with part-time telework. Occasional travel will be required in execution of assigned duties. Must be a US Citizen and currently possess a SECRET security clearance.
Salary commensurate with years and applicability of experience ranging from $90 – $110K.
