JOB OVERVIEW:

The EPMS Engineer (Electrical Power Monitoring Systems) designs, engineers, and deploys power monitoring and metering systems for commercial, industrial, and mission-critical facilities. This role involves system design, equipment specification, network architecture, and coordination with customers and consulting engineers to implement comprehensive energy management solutions. The EPMS Engineer serves as the technical expert for power monitoring projects, ensuring systems are properly designed to provide accurate metering, power quality analysis, and energy data for facility optimization. Reporting to the COO, this position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but coordinates closely with Project Managers, technicians, and subcontractors.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and engineer Electrical Power Monitoring Systems including metering, power quality analysis, and energy management systems.
  • Develop system architecture, communication networks, and equipment layouts for power monitoring platforms.
  • Prepare comprehensive shop drawings, submittals, and equipment schedules by reviewing project electrical plans, specifications, and single-line diagrams.
  • Create EPMS drawings including meter locations, CT/PT sizing, network layouts, and communication risers.
  • Select and specify power meters, CTs, PTs, gateways, and communication equipment to meet project requirements.
  • Size current transformers and potential transformers based on electrical system characteristics.
  • Develop system databases, configurations, and dashboards for power monitoring platforms (Schneider ION, Square D, Siemens, or similar).
  • Interface with customers, facility managers, electrical engineers, and energy managers to coordinate project requirements.
  • Coordinate with general contractors, electrical contractors, and IT departments for installation and network requirements.
  • Provide technical support to project managers, programmers, and field technicians during system installation, startup, and commissioning.
  • Perform system commissioning including meter verification, communication testing, and data validation.
  • Order equipment and materials based on project schedules and requirements.
  • Conduct site surveys to evaluate existing electrical systems and determine monitoring requirements.
  • Support estimating and sales teams with technical expertise during pre-sales and proposal development.
  • May act as Project Manager for smaller projects or serve as design engineer on larger projects.
  • Manage and engineer multiple projects across various client sites, ensuring timelines and deliverables are met.
  • Maintain customer satisfaction with building owners, facility managers, and consulting engineers.
  • Stay current with power monitoring technologies, energy codes, and industry best practices.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma required.
  • 4-year technical degree in electrical engineering, power systems, or related field preferred.
  • Candidates with military background or 2-year technical degree in a related field, combined with significant experience (4-6 years working as an engineer or high-functioning technician), will be considered in lieu of 4-year degree.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in power monitoring, metering systems, or electrical engineering (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Strong working knowledge of electrical power systems, metering, and power quality concepts.
  • Understanding of electrical distribution systems, single-line diagrams, and electrical calculations.
  • Experience with power monitoring platforms such as Schneider ION, Square D, Siemens, or equivalent systems.
  • Knowledge of communication protocols including Modbus, BACnet, DNP3, and Ethernet/IP.
  • Ability to read and create electrical drawings using AutoCAD or similar software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Visio) and engineering drawing tools.
  • Familiarity with new construction, renovation/retrofit, and service projects.
  • Knowledge of contracting processes and subcontractor relationships.
  • Strong technical writing skills for specifications, submittals, and documentation.
  • Excellent customer-facing communication and presentation skills.
  • Valid driver's license without restrictions.
  • Ability to pass background checks, DMV checks, and drug screenings.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, power systems engineering, or related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
  • Schneider Electric or similar manufacturer certifications.
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or Certified Measurement & Verification Professional (CMVP).
  • Experience with power quality analysis and harmonics mitigation.
  • Knowledge of utility rate structures and demand management strategies.
  • Experience with building automation system integration.
  • Understanding of data center power monitoring and PUE calculations.
  • Project management experience or PMP certification.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Primarily office-based with regular site visits for surveys, commissioning, and coordination meetings.
  • Ability to conduct facility walks and equipment inspections, which may require accessing electrical rooms, climbing ladders, and working near energized equipment.
  • Lift and carry up to 25 pounds (laptop, test equipment, documentation).
  • Extended periods of computer work for system design, drawing creation, and documentation.
  • Occasional after-hours availability for system commissioning and project meetings.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Mix of office work (60-70%) and field visits to customer sites and construction projects (30-40%).
  • Work schedule: Monday-Friday (typical business hours) with flexibility for customer meetings and occasional after-hours commissioning.
  • Commercial buildings, industrial facilities, data centers, hospitals, educational institutions, and government facilities.
  • Some travel within designated territory, including occasional overnight stays depending on project locations (15-25%).
  • Exposure to electrical rooms and construction environments during site visits. Work near energized equipment requires adherence to safety protocols.

Pay: $125,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
