What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Project Manager position at Card Monroe?
Card-Monroe Automation is seeking an experienced Senior Project Manager to lead complex engineering design-build projects from award through final customer acceptance.
This is not a general administrative project management role. You will own project scope, schedule, budget, forecasting, risk management, customer communication, and overall execution. You will work closely with mechanical and electrical engineers, controls professionals, procurement, manufacturing, assembly technicians, quality, vendors, and customers to deliver integrated automation systems and custom equipment.
The right candidate understands how technical projects move through engineering, procurement, manufacturing, installation, startup, and customer acceptance—and knows how to keep teams aligned when priorities shift or challenges arise.
What You’ll Do
- Lead complex engineering, industrial automation, and custom equipment projects from award through final acceptance.
- Develop and maintain detailed project plans covering scope, schedule, resources, budget, cash flow, and forecasting.
- Translate project requirements into clear objectives, deliverables, milestones, and team responsibilities.
- Drive project execution and hold cross-functional teams accountable for established commitments.
- Lead effective project meetings and maintain clear communication among engineering, procurement, manufacturing, quality, vendors, customers, and other stakeholders.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for customers throughout the project lifecycle.
- Monitor project costs, profitability, cash flow, forecasts, and overall financial performance.
- Partner with department leaders to identify resource needs and address staffing constraints.
- Work with engineering and procurement to keep material and labor costs aligned with project budgets.
- Identify scope changes and prepare engineering change notices and change orders when appropriate.
- Identify project risks early and develop practical mitigation and recovery plans.
- Resolve issues affecting project scope, schedule, quality, cost, or customer expectations.
- Provide timely project status updates, including progress, financial performance, risks, issues, and corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate project plans, reports, correspondence, and other required documentation.
- Support established processes within an ISO 9001:2015-certified quality management system.
- Identify and implement improvements to project management tools, reporting, and processes.
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, management, or a related field.
- At least eight years of project management experience in engineering, industrial automation, custom equipment manufacturing, systems integration, or a closely related environment.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex, cross-functional engineering projects from award through final customer acceptance.
- Strong experience managing project budgets, cost tracking, forecasting, cash flow, profitability, and change orders.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Project and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong understanding of engineering and manufacturing processes involved in delivering integrated systems or custom automated equipment.
- Ability to identify project risks, make decisions, and restore projects that are falling behind schedule or budget.
- Strong customer-facing communication and relationship-management skills.
- Ability to lead through influence and hold teams accountable, including team members who do not report directly to you.
- Comfort working through ambiguity, changing priorities, and technically complex situations.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work on-site in Greenville, South Carolina, and travel occasionally to customer, supplier, or company facilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- PMP certification.
- Experience with industrial automation, robotics, controls, material handling, machine building, or engineered-to-order equipment.
- Experience working within an ISO 9001:2015-certified quality management system.
- Experience improving project management processes, tools, or reporting systems.
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role means projects are actively managed—not simply monitored. Customers and internal teams receive clear communication, risks are identified early, scope changes are captured, financial performance is understood, and teams have the direction and accountability needed to deliver successful projects.
Work Environment
This position is primarily based in an office setting at our Greenville, South Carolina, location. The Senior Project Manager will also regularly work with teams in manufacturing environments and may occasionally travel to customer, supplier, or other company facilities.
