Pinto Valley is an open-pit copper mine located at the west end of the historic Globe-Miami mining district of central Arizona, approximately 80 miles east of Phoenix. Pinto Valley has been in operation since 1972 and has produced more than four billion pounds of copper. Acquired by Capstone from BHP in 2013, the mine is fully permitted through 2039 and a study is underway to potentially extend the mine life through 2050.

Position Requirements

• Work in compliance with all Pinto Valley Mine and MSHA safety guidelines and procedures
• Work in compliance with all Pinto Valley Mine Standard Operating Procedures
• Ensure that employees and contractors are competent to execute the tasks / jobs assigned
• Sample groundwater, surface water, and potable water for regulatory compliance.
• Work in Intelex database for surface water and groundwater compliance to ensure that laboratory data is input in a timely manner, exceedance reviews are completed and SMRF and DMR reports are generated accurately.
• Assist with record keeping requirements for regulatory and site requirements including, but not limited to air, groundwater, surface water, storm water, potable water, hazardous waste, non-hazardous waste, recycling, sustainability, and spills.
• Update the compliance calendar when tasks are completed to ensure that work has been completed and filed. Follow up with area supervisors to ensure required documents they complete are returned to environmental as necessary.
• Assist with Purchase Orders for the Environmental Department, including supplies needed for sampling.
• Conduct Bi-Weekly opacity observations of 20-point sources’ emissions. Maintain Method 9 certification for visual opacity monitoring (recertify every 6 months as required by regulation).
• Conduct weekly inspections of hazardous waste building and update material inventory as necessary. Alert Environmental Specialist when waste needs to be removed from the site. Maintain HAZWOPER and RCRA certification as required by regulation.
• Inspect and monitor status (full or partially full) of waste bins (roll offs) and used oil filter totes that are the responsibility of the Environmental Dept. Alert Environmental Specialist when roll offs need removed from the site. Prepare manifests and sign for shipments. Maintain DOT certification as required by regulation.
• Enter waste shipment manifests/bill of ladings into waste tracking spreadsheets. Enter recycling information (material shipping request forms) into recycling tracking spreadsheets.
• Keep waste profile spreadsheet up to date and all waste profiles in a binder for the site.
• Assist Environmental Specialist in the management of spill kits across the site and creating new kits upon request.
• Work with area owners to assist with moving SAA’s to hazardous waste storage building when full, making sure new drums get set up and labeled properly.
• Escort CTI trucks when they come on site to drop off, relocate, or remove waste bins.
• Track spill incidents as they are reported and transfer report forms to Spills file. Assist Environmental Specialists with field work, research, data collection, record keeping and other requirements / projects as needed.
• Inform Environmental Specialists regarding potential violations, areas of potential risk and other environmental concerns that may impact the facility, which are noticed during field surveys and area inspections.

Required

• HS diploma
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Work effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
• Safety-focused, technically adept, and fluent in spoken and written English.
• This position is onsite at Pinto Valley Mine.
  
  

Preferred

• 1-2 years environmental or heavy industry experience.
  
  

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Combination of office-based and field-based work in an active open pit mining operation.
• Frequent walking on uneven ground and navigating active mine work environment
• Occasional stair climbing.
• Occasional climbing of fixed ladders and elevated structures.
• Exposure to dust, noise, heat, and varying weather conditions.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) when working in operational areas.
  
  

All candidates will be required to complete a pre-employment medical exam, drug and alcohol test, and background check. All positions require a pre-placement physical examination to ensure candidates are 'fit for duty’. Additional training and/or testing may be required.
