Job Description
The Planning & TOD Intern will support Capital Metro’s Service Planning and Transit-Oriented Development teams by assisting with research, analysis, community engagement, and project coordination for transit and redevelopment initiatives. This role provides hands-on experience in urban planning, transit operations, GIS, and cross-departmental collaboration to help advance key agency projects.

Work is generally performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to unpleasant and/or hazardous working conditions with opportunities to experience both office settings and operational facilities such as maintenance garages or transit hubs where safety regulations will be strictly enforced. This position works with multiple project timelines.
Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently throughout a six to eight-hour period, reach vertically for overhead use as well as horizontally. Must be able to use a telephone or headset equipment.
Incumbents must be able to lift and move material weighing up to 20 lbs., perform work at a computer terminal for 6-8 hours a day, and function in an environment with constant interruptions.

Mobility Status
As a Stationed position, the incumbent is expected to be assigned an individual workspace. Expected to work in the office for the majority of their work hours. Mobility status is subject to change at any time based on business needs or organizational decisions.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
Responsibilities May Include
- Coordinate with Service Planning and TOD teams to align planning documents, standards, and project needs.
- Assist with peer reviews of standards and best practices across agencies.
- Support internal engagement, including meeting coordination, agenda setting, and detailed notetaking across departments.
- Conduct research and prepare draft language for new planning or TOD guidelines.
- Use ArcGIS and other analytical tools to create maps, conduct geospatial analysis, and support transit planning efforts.
- Assist with community engagement activities and represent CapMetro in neighborhood, local, and regional planning forums.
- Develop responses to public inquiries, including customer call reports (CCRs).
- Assist with writing, editing, and preparing technical memos, presentations, and reports.
- Support TOD project documentation, including studies, funding research, and redevelopment site materials.
- Participate in field reviews related to bus stop improvements, route changes, or TOD site evaluations.
- Submit and manage creative requests with the marketing team to update graphics and materials.
- Support CapMetro’s Safety Management Systems (SMS) by following all safety and security policies and reporting safety concerns.
- Perform other duties as required and/or assigned.
WHAT YOU BRING
- Currently enrolled in an accredited college/university with a major in Urban or Regional Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Geography, or related field.
- Experience in transit and/or urban and regional planning preferred.
- Experience with Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS) required; experience with land use, housing, or real estate transactions preferred.
- Knowledge of land use, community planning, transportation planning, and transit-oriented development.
- Strong research and analytical skills, including data analysis and GIS skills.
- Clear and effective written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present to internal and external audiences.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain professional and courteous communication with staff, partners, and community members.
- This is a PAID internship.
