Accounting Specialist
Location: Sacramento, CA (in-office)
Reports To: Director of Finance
Department: Accounting / Finance
Classification: Full-time, hourly, non-exempt
Hourly Range: $27.89–$34.62/hour (approx. $58,000–$72,000 annualized)
Position Summary
The Accounting Specialist manages day-to-day accounting transactions across the company, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger entries, and account reconciliations. This role works closely with department leaders to obtain coding and approvals and supports the Director of Finance with review and final reconciliation.
Key Responsibilities
- Process accounts payable, including receiving, routing, and tracking invoices; entering approved invoices into the accounting system; and preparing payment batches.
- Process accounts receivable, including creating customer and internal invoices from department instructions, tracking outstanding balances, and preparing and recording deposits.
- Perform general ledger data entry and prepare routine journal entries.
- Reconcile bank and credit card activity, match transactions, and support monthly account reconciliations.
- Maintain complete supporting documentation for transactions and internal review.
- Prepare recurring reports, including accounts receivable aging and cash summaries, as directed by Finance.
- Support month-end close by preparing account schedules and documentation for final review.
- Coordinate with department contacts to resolve coding questions, missing documentation, and discrepancies.
- Help improve accounting processes and use available technology, including AI-based tools, to reduce manual work and improve accuracy.
Qualifications
- Associate's or bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field with approximately 1-2 years of relevant accounting experience. Candidates without a degree may be considered with approximately 3-4 years of comparable experience.
- Hands-on experience with accounts payable and/or accounts receivable.
- Working knowledge of general ledger accounting, journal entries, and account reconciliations.
- Beginner-to-intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with QuickBooks preferred; experience with Yardi is a plus.
- Commercial real estate, property accounting, or underwriting experience is helpful but not required.
- Comfort using or learning modern technology and AI-based tools that support accounting workflows.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage recurring deadlines across multiple departments.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- This position requires prolonged periods of sitting and computer work, with occasional walking, standing, reaching, bending, and stooping. Must be able to occasionally lift and carry up to 20 pounds.
