Capital Power Corporation is currently seeking an innovative and dynamic individual to join our Commercial Management team responsible for the US Renewables portfolio!
Reporting Directly to the Vice President (VP), Corporate Development and US Renewables, you will be responsible for overseeing Capital Power’s US Renewables fleet, and will have comprehensive accountability for the financial (EBITDA) and non-financial aspects of our operational assets. You will lead a team of commercial specialists who will manage the day-to-day commercial aspects with the shared aim to protect and enhance asset value, acting as team leader to make key decisions on operating renewable projects.You will also be responsible for monitoring market developments and their impact on the renewable assets, devising strategies to preserve and enhance the value of operating renewable assets.
You will contribute to our team by
- Leading and coordinating your direct reports and internal Subject Matter Expert (“SME”) teams to achieve effective commercial management, and optimization of value, for assets in the portfolio.
- Steering the interaction with appropriate SMEs – operations, legal, credit, regulatory, finance, environmental, external suppliers, and off-takers – on commercial activities that generate revenue, reduce cost, or reduce and/or mitigate risks and/or provide opportunities for enhancing value.
- Proactively managing and ensuring compliance with all related commercial agreements based on a strong working knowledge of relevant commercial environments, counterparties, and contracts that interface with the assets in the portfolio.
- Engaging in the negotiation of commercial contracts with external third parties – e.g. PPAs, service agreements, long-term service agreements, and tax-equity agreements.
- Providing commercial support with respect to (a) renewable development projects under construction and (b) due diligence efforts surrounding acquisitions and new builds of renewable assets.
- Achieving annual value addition targets and evaluating the commercial viability of business opportunities with the aim to enhance asset values.
- Providing strategic guidance, review, and support to direct reports across specific projects, both new and ongoing.
- Acting as the commercial lead and SME on issues that may arise or present future value opportunities for the portfolio. This may include making recommendations to the Executive Team.
- Overseeing the monitoring and assessment of the external environment, guiding SMEs to execute plans addressing both threats and opportunities affecting assets and the wider organization.
- Encouraging collaborative relationships within all departments and extending these relationships to senior-level external counterparts, regulators, and external resources, such as consultants or experts.
- Assuming the role of a mentor and outstanding leader, actively involved in the development, training, mentoring, and guidance of employees both within the department and across the organization.
What you will bring to the role
Education
- Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Commerce, Economics, or related field.
- MBA or CFA would be considered an asset.
Experience:
- Minimum 10 years of comprehensive experience in an asset management, business development, commercial, or financial and analytical role(s), preferably in electricity, renewables (wind and solar), or other related industries.
- Strong knowledge/experience with respect to US power markets, power generation, power marketing, regulatory, commodities and related agreements, transmission/transport and related agreements, power purchase agreements, and tax-equity financing and related agreements is preferred.
Technical & Social Process Skills:
- Deep understanding and experience in power markets, electricity generating plants, plant operations for each region where the asset is situated.
- Experience working with complex legal agreements or contracts.
- Commercial management or negotiating experience.
- Reasonable levels of financial analysis skills, familiarity with financial statements, budgets, forecasting and development of asset earnings profiles.
- Proficient in contract review and negotiations.
- Project management experience and ability to interface with all levels of the organization.
- Ability for travel in the North American market to plant sites and other offices.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Well presented with the ability to represent the company with external parties.
- Ability to work with multiple internal and external stakeholders, on multi-disciplinary issues and opportunities.
- Takes initiative, ability to deal with ambiguity and conflict and ability to exercise influence.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to handle dynamic and heavy workload.
- Capable of making sound decisions of an independent nature.
- Provide recommendations to Senior Management to resolve issues in a proactive manner that benefits the interests of Capital Power.
