What are the responsibilities and job description for the SAP Finance Master Data Governance Consultant – S/4HANA position at capgemini?
We are seeking an experienced SAP Finance Master Data Governance consultant to provide short-term, hands-on enablement for a corporate team that will own key finance master data in a new SAP S/4HANA landscape.
The organization will not use SAP’s native MDG module; requests will be initiated through a ServiceNow ticketing solution and executed through a corporate MDG team with BPO support.
The consultant must quickly absorb the organization’s S/4HANA design and translate it into practical governance, request intake, templates, SOPs, training, cutover support, hypercare, and stabilization.
Key Responsibilities:
Stand up the Finance MDG operating model covering roles, responsibilities, approvals, escalations, quality gates, SLAs, and hand-offs between corporate personnel and the BPO partner (WNS).
Complete and refine the ServiceNow request intake process for finance master data, ensuring request types, required fields, routing, approvals, and controls are fit for operational use.
Design clear, controlled request templates for core finance master data objects, including GL accounts, profit centres, cost centres, internal orders, projects/WBS, hierarchies, mappings, and reference tables.
Develop practical SOPs, work instructions, control checklists, and exception-handling procedures for finance master data creation, change, extension, blocking, deletion, and hierarchy maintenance.
Embed understanding of the company’s S/4HANA design, including custom code block, organizational structures, validations and substitutions, and direct client maintenance responsibilities such as OB09, OBYA, OKB9, and FSE3.
Train and coach corporate MDG personnel and BPO resources so that non-SAP specialists understand what “good” master data governance looks like and why it is critical to business operations, reporting, controls, and close execution.
Support cutover readiness, post-go-live hypercare, issue triage, defect/root cause analysis, stabilization, and handover to steady-state operations.
Establish data quality monitoring, governance reporting, and remediation routines to prevent poor master data maintenance and identify recurring process/control gaps.
Required Candidate Profile:
Deep hands-on SAP Finance / Controlling master data experience in SAP S/4HANA and/or ECC-to-S/4HANA transformation environments.
Strong finance fluency, with the ability to explain impacts of master data decisions on Record-to-Report, FP&A, statutory reporting, management reporting, controls, tax, and operational processing.
Prior experience owning, leading, or materially shaping a Finance MDG function, preferably in a complex, multi-entity corporate environment.
Practical knowledge of finance master data objects including GL accounts, profit centres, cost centres, internal orders, WBS/projects, hierarchies, mappings, reporting structures, and controlling assignments.
Comfortable working without SAP native MDG, using ticketing/workflow tools such as ServiceNow to enforce request capture, approvals, governance, and auditability.
Ability to design pragmatic templates, SOPs, training materials, operating procedures, and control points for business users and BPO execution teams.
Strong stakeholder management skills, with the credibility to influence Finance, IT, deployment teams, corporate teams, and outsourced service providers.
Able to hit the ground running in a fast-moving deployment environment and convert complex SAP design into clear operating practices for non-SAP specialists.
Highly Desirable Experience
Experience supporting S/4HANA go-live, cutover, hypercare, and stabilization for Finance master data.
Experience working with outsourced/BPO master data teams, ideally including offshore execution models.
Exposure to SOX / ICFR or similar finance control environments.
Familiarity with validation/substitution logic, organizational structure dependencies, chart of accounts governance, intercompany setup, cost allocation defaults, and financial statement version maintenance.
Engagement Deliverables:
Operational Finance MDG governance model and RACI.
ServiceNow request catalogue / intake design for finance master data.
Standard request templates and minimum data requirements by object type.
SOPs, work instructions, approval matrices, SLAs, and quality checks.
Training and knowledge transfer for corporate MDG and BPO teams.
Cutover and hyper care support plan, including triage and stabilization routines.
Data quality metrics, reporting cadence, and continuous improvement recommendations.
Primary Focus:
Set up the corporate Finance MDG team and BPO execution model for success ahead of and following first S/4HANA go-live
Go-Live Context:
First deployment wave goes live in September; corporate team assumes responsibility for key finance master data from go-live onward
Scope Exclusions:
Customer and vendor master data are outside this role’s remit
Key Message:
This is not a generic project management or ticketing role. The consultant must be a finance-literate SAP master data governance specialist who has operated close to the detail of SAP Finance master data, understands the downstream consequences of poor maintenance, and can rapidly stand up a sustainable operating model for a corporate team and BPO partner ahead of an imminent S/4HANA go-live.
