Capel, Incorporated is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Import Manager to manage the importation of goods and material into the country. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing sourcing activities, negotiating contracts, overseeing the end-to-end process of importing rugs and other materials, ensuring compliance with regulations, optimizing supply chain efficiency, and coordinating transportation and warehouse activities. This role requires a strong understanding of supply chain management, inventory control, and transportation systems to facilitate seamless global trade operations.
Responsibilities:
The Import Manager will oversee the entire import process for rugs and related products. Typical duties include:
Coordinating Shipments and Logistics —
· Arrange freight (ocean containers are common for bulky rugs), track shipments, and work with freight forwarders, shipping lines, and customs brokers to ensure timely delivery.
· Monitor freight costs, pricing strategies, and procurement activities to maximize value.
· Ensure accurate shipping & receiving documentation, order fulfillment, and packaging standards.
· Negotiate contracts, freight rates, and terms with suppliers, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and carriers to achieve cost savings.
Customs Compliance and Documentation —
· Handle import declarations, classify rugs under correct HS codes (e.g., for hand-knotted vs. machine-made rugs), calculate duties/tariffs, and ensure compliance with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) rules, including any anti-dumping duties or trade agreements.
Supplier and Vendor Management —
· Negotiate contracts with overseas suppliers for pricing, terms, quality, and lead times; maintain relationships to secure reliable sources of artisanal rugs.
· Conduct root cause analysis to resolve procurement issues, improve supply chain efficiency, and mitigate risks.
· Analyze supply chain data for continuous improvement initiatives and supply chain analytics.
· Review and approve all invoices related to the import department.
· Review and approve weekly inspection reports from India.
Cost Optimization —
· Monitor freight rates, duties, and insurance; seek lower-cost carriers or routes to reduce expenses while maintaining quality.
Risk Management and Problem-Solving —
· Address delays (e.g., port congestion), quality issues, or regulatory changes; develop contingency plans.
Inventory and Internal Coordination —
· Collaborate with sales, warehouse, and finance teams to align imports with demand, manage inventory levels, and handle payments/letters of credit.
· Conduct demand planning, inventory management, and category management to maintain optimal stock levels.
· Lead warehouse operations including picking & packing, dispatching, forklift operations, and materials management.
· Maintain cost sheets for existing and new rug styles.
· Send out announcements of new product adoptions.
Regulatory Updates —
· Stay informed on international trade laws, tariffs (e.g., Section 301 on certain origins), and industry-specific rules like those for wool or silk rugs.
In the rug industry, additional focus areas may include ethical sourcing (e.g., no child labor in hand-knotted rugs) and verifying authenticity/origin for high-value antique or heirloom pieces.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, International Trade, Logistics, or a related field.
- 3 years of experience in procurement, preferably with a focus on imports/international sourcing.
- Strong knowledge of import regulations, Incoterms, customs procedures, and global trade compliance.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills for dealing with international suppliers.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to evaluate supplier quotations and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Professional certifications (e.g., APICS, MCIPS, CPSM, or customs brokerage license) are a plus.
- Fluency in English; additional languages relevant to key sourcing regions are advantageous.
