Position Overview

Cape Romain Contractors, Inc. is seeking an experienced Safety Director to lead our company-wide safety program across all marine and heavy civil construction operations. This is a key leadership role responsible for building and sustaining a proactive, field-focused safety culture in demanding work environments.

The Safety Director serves as the company’s senior safety authority, reporting directly to the President and working daily with project managers, superintendents, foremen, and tug crews. This position owns the development, implementation, and enforcement of safety policies; drives consistency across all jobsites; and ensures full compliance with OSHA, DOT, U.S. Coast Guard/Subchapter M, and owner requirements.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who is comfortable in the field, able to influence crews and management, and capable of turning audit findings, incident data, and claims information into practical, measurable safety improvements.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Program & Culture

  • Own, manage, and continuously improve the company-wide Safety Program.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce site-specific safety plans and Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs).
  • Conduct routine jobsite safety audits and ensure corrective actions are documented and closed out.
  • Coach and support field leadership to embed safety into daily planning and production.

Compliance, Inspections & Recordkeeping

  • Maintain required OSHA documentation, including OSHA 300, 300A, and 301 logs.
  • Lead OSHA, DOT, USCG, insurance, and client safety audits and inspections.
  • Oversee Subchapter M and U.S. Coast Guard compliance for tugs and marine operations.
  • Maintain the authorized drivers list and support fleet-related safety requirements.

Incident & Claims Management

  • Lead investigations for incidents and near misses, including root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Manage workers’ compensation and auto claims from initial report through final resolution.
  • Track safety trends and implement targeted improvements in training, procedures, or equipment.

Training, Meetings & Readiness

  • Conduct new-hire safety orientation and ongoing safety training.
  • Lead weekly toolbox talks and formal safety meetings.
  • Coordinate and track CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications.
  • Lead the company’s annual Safety Stand-Down and special safety campaigns.
  • Oversee fire extinguisher inspections, emergency equipment readiness, and safety supply and PPE inventories.

Leadership & Field Support

  • Provide daily safety support to project managers, superintendents, foremen, and tug crews.
  • Supervise and coordinate any Site Safety & Health Officers (SSHOs) assigned to projects.
  • Collaborate with leadership to establish safety goals and drive accountability across the company.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Associate’s degree or higher in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Health & Safety, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Industrial Technology, or a related field required.
  • Bachelor’s degree is strongly preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of construction safety experience, preferably in heavy civil, highway, bridge, or marine construction.
  • Minimum 2 years in a safety management or lead role overseeing multiple sites or crews.

Technical & Regulatory Knowledge

  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA 1926 construction standards.
  • Experience with cranes and rigging, fall protection, excavation, scaffolding, hazard communication, and LOTO.
  • Familiarity with marine safety and Subchapter M compliance is a plus.
  • Ability to create site-specific safety plans, JHAs/AHAs, and training materials.

Certifications

  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction required (or ability to obtain within 60 days).
  • CHST, CSP, ASP, OHST, OSHA 500/510, or similar certifications preferred.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification required; instructor level preferred or willingness to obtain.

Skills & Attributes

  • Strong field presence with the ability to build credibility quickly.
  • Clear, direct communicator with strong coaching and corrective-action skills.
  • Highly organized and consistent in documentation and follow-up.
  • Able to work outdoors on barges, bridges, and in marine environments year-round.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally and regionally as needed.
