Position Overview: Support the upkeep and preservation of The Virginia Hotel, The Ebbitt Room, and our historic cottages—ensuring that every space is safe, functional, and welcoming for guests and staff alike. This role combines hands-on repair work with the care and attention to detail expected of a premier Cape May property.
These duties may be described as, but not limited to:
- General Maintenance & Repair: Under the direction of the Director of Maintenance, perform repairs and upkeep across all properties, including guest rooms, public spaces, dining areas, and cottages.
- Record Keeping: Accurately log all work activity in the property’s maintenance software, tracking tasks from start to completion.
- Safety Systems: Ensure all safety systems—including fire alarms, emergency lighting, and exit signage—are fully operational and compliant with hotel standards.
- Guest Response: Respond promptly to guest room calls, addressing maintenance issues with professionalism and minimal disruption.
- Seasonal Preparedness: Assist with seasonal property transitions, including winterization, spring reopening, and summer readiness.
- Cottage Support: Help maintain the unique character of our historic cottages, addressing both routine maintenance and special projects as they arise.
- Collaboration: Work alongside other maintenance and operations team members to support larger projects and ensure seamless property operations.
- Fire Alarm Response Team: Serve as a designated member of the Fire Alarm Response Team, responding to alarms and assisting with guest safety as needed.
- Schedule Flexibility: Due to the seasonal nature of hospitality, hours may vary to reflect business needs. Attendance at all scheduled training sessions and team meetings is required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Must read, write, and understand the primary language used in the workplace.
- Must have all around skills and be able to make minor electrical, plumbing, a/c, painting, wallpaper, and carpentry repairs.
- Must possess a high level of accuracy and neatness.
- Must be able to stand and exert well-paced mobility for up to 4 hours in length and be able to reach other locations of the hotel on a timely basis.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, squat and stretch to full cleaning and maintenance tasks.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds on a regular and continuing basis, frequently lift 50 pounds, and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.
- The worker is subject to hazards; includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat, chemicals, atmospheric conditions—one or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or skin: fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, oils or other cutting fluids, or poor ventilation.
- Requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening, and hearing ability and visual acuity.
- Requires manual dexterity to use and operate all necessary equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school or equivalent education required.
- Must have a minimum of three years hands-on experience working on minor electrical, painting, plumbing and a/c repairs.
- Must have the ability to obtain and/or maintain any government required licenses, certificates, or permits.
- All employees must maintain a neat, clean, and well-groomed appearance per Congress Hall standards.
