Overview
To provide an approved elementary and special education program that establishes a classroom environment fostering learning and personal growth; to help pupils develop the skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to build a strong foundation for continued education; and to maintain positive, collaborative relationships with parents and other staff members.
Responsibilities
- Provides instruction to classified pupils in accordance with each pupil's Individualized Education Program (IEP), working to achieve state core curriculum content standards and district educational goals through active learning, board-adopted curriculum, and other appropriate learning activities.
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials; provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the unique needs, interests, and ability levels of each pupil, including age-appropriate class activities and lesson presentations.
- Sets specific, measurable objectives in lesson preparation and weekly lesson plans, carrying through presentation to effectively achieve those objectives while budgeting class time effectively.
- Monitors pupil academic progress and personal growth toward stated instructional objectives; maintains records of educational progress in class record books and/or board-approved forms and summarizes marks for reporting purposes.
- Works cooperatively with regular education teaching staff to coordinate instructional activities and monitor each pupil's progress; provides support instruction in the regular classroom or resource center as assigned.
- Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and resolving learning and behavioral challenges; establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to achieve a classroom climate conducive to learning.
- Consults with members of the Child Study Team regarding each pupil's educational, academic, and personal growth; meets at least annually with the case manager, parents, and other professional staff to review and revise the IEP and placement of each assigned pupil.
- Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to inform them about the school program and to discuss pupil progress.
- Devises written and oral assignments and assessments that require both analytical and critical thinking as well as the reproduction of facts; plans instruction that meets individual needs across all ability levels.
- Provides home instruction to confined special education pupils as assigned.
- Upholds and enforces school rules, administrative regulations, and board policy; participates in the development of the district's plan for special education.
- Maintains professional competence and pursues continuous improvement through in-service education and other professional growth activities; participates in school-level planning, faculty meetings, committees, and other school system groups.
- Makes effective use of community resources to enhance the instructional program.
- Performs other duties within the scope of employment and certification as assigned.
Qualifications
- Valid NJ DOE P-3 certificate, Special Education Certificate, and Elementary Endorsement or eligibility required
- Minimum experience as determined by the board
- Demonstrated knowledge of effective teaching methods and ability to maintain a positive learning environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal alien status
