Under the direction of the manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day technical operations of the applicable laboratory section, in accordance with the established hospital and department policies and standards. Plays a lead role in the strategic planning process and the implementation of initiatives focused on enhanced performance, workflow redesign, and developing a culture that emphasizes excellence in the quality and delivery of laboratory services.Major Job Functions

Provide leadership and guidance to staff in goal setting, problem solving, resource management, and outcome achievement
Collaborates with Department Manager to define performance objectives and assesses the level of competence of staff in a timely manner
Collaborates with other departments to problem solve ongoing issues that impact departmental/organizational goals and patient care delivery
Collaborates with Department Manager to incorporate quality improvement and patient satisfaction data into departmental goals
Demonstrates a clear understanding of regulations applicable to patient care and other department functions
Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment
Promotes effective communication between internal staff and other external departments to allow for growth as a collaborative, effective, and efficient team
Responsible for the section’s operational excellence and ensures that the section delivers quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and professional standards
Effectively communicate sectional, organizational, and technical information to staff
Set and attain goals and objectives within specified time frames, as part of the organization’s overall mission
Attends required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, section/service safety, and specific job‑related hazards
Follows the hospital exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens
Maintains and updates technical knowledge and skills and participates in sharing of this knowledge with the staff
Ensures that ancillary staff within the section is performing required duties
Performs duties of staff technologist to include, but not limited to: a) Orienting all new employees/students to procedures and processes of department b) Assessing and completing training/competency of new hires/students c) Maintaining self-competency in all departments
Ensures staffing efficiency and performance within the section. This includes, but is not limited to: a) Creating and maintaining training materials for new hires/students b) Establishing, disseminating, updating, and maintaining departmental procedure manuals c) Ensuring that staff performs testing according to established procedures d) Scheduling work assignments and planning work schedules of employees/students e) Re-evaluating the competency of all testing personnel before final signatures are obtained f) Maintaining organization of workflow/workstations g) Prioritizing workload and reassigning work duties, as needed h) Establishing and executing corrective actions for behavior or performance issues if necessary
Ensures equipment is performing at optimal levels to include, but not limited to: a) Reviewing test results b) Reviewing QC at least bi-weekly and understanding troubleshooting of QC issues c) Verifying that daily, weekly, monthly, and as needed maintenance on instruments and equipment is completed on time and effectively d) Troubleshooting instrumentation and processes in an effort to maintain an efficient workflow e) Participating in the evaluation and selection of equipment, methods, and procedures needed for the section f) Performing required accreditation requirements for the validation and maintenance of all equipment (correlations, linearities, etc..)
Ensures material needs of the laboratory is sufficient to meet workload to include, but not limited to: a) Ordering, as needed, inventory and supplies required to efficiently operate the section b) Maintaining organization of storage areas and workstations
Assumes complete supervisory responsibility for the entire laboratory on rotating weekends, holidays and evenings
Maintains records and documentation in compliance with required rules and regulations of regulatory and accrediting agencies and organizations
Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:
Education and Formal Training:
Must have one of the following required degrees: Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Bachelors degree in Histotechnology or Bachelor’s degree in Cytology
Bachelor's degree in in Medical Laboratory Science preferred
MLS/MLT(ASCP), HTL/HT(ASCP), CT(ASCP), or equivalent agency required. Certification must be obtained within one year of employment to maintain position.
Work Experience:
2 years of laboratory experience in high complexity testing required
5 years of laboratory experience with 1 year of supervisory experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
Supervisory skills for accepting responsibility, making decisions, directing and supervising personnel within the section
Communication and motivational skills in order to maintain a positive work environment and encourage growth within the department
Knowledge to investigate and evaluate new methodologies for presentation to management for approval
Ability to operate equipment at sitting or standing levels
Flexibility and adaptability to work additional hours or shifts under stress
Effective communication skills to include listening, writing, talking and reading.
Ability to communicate via telephone, LIS, email and verbally.
Ability to work efficiently and accurately.
Ability to organize and plan work.
Knowledge of regulatory requirements including: safety, CAP, JCAHO, CLIA, North Carolina State and federal guidelines.
Knowledgeable of Erickson's Developmental model relative to adolescents and all adult age groups in order to assess qualification and performance of staff and oversee orientation and training of staff who interact with patients in these age groups.
