PRN Pharmacist – Long-Term Care PharmacyPosition Summary
Cape Fear Long Term Care Pharmacy is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented PRN Pharmacist to join our team in Lillington, North Carolina.
The PRN Pharmacist is responsible for ensuring medications are reviewed, prepared, verified, and dispensed safely, accurately, and on time for the healthcare facilities and residents we serve. This position works closely with pharmacy leadership, technicians, and other members of the pharmacy team to support daily pharmacy operations, prescription verification, medication adjustments, quality assurance, and facility medication needs.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced long-term care or retail pharmacist seeking flexibility, a retail pharmacist interested in gaining long-term care experience, or a semi-retired pharmacist who would like to continue practicing on a PRN basis.
Pharmacy Hours of Operation
Our pharmacy operates:
Monday–Friday: 9:00 AM–6:00 PM
Saturday: 10:00 AM–4:00 PM
Sunday: Closed
Some holiday coverage may be required.
Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesPrescription Verification & Quality Control
- Review and verify prescription orders for accuracy, completeness, and appropriateness.
- Perform final pharmacist verification before medications are dispensed.
- Ensure the correct medication, strength, dosage form, quantity, labeling, and packaging are provided.
- Maintain a high level of accuracy throughout the dispensing and verification process.
- Identify and resolve prescription discrepancies and medication-related concerns.
- Clarify medication orders with prescribers or other healthcare professionals when necessary.
- Exercise professional judgment regarding medication safety and patient care.
- Perform quality control checks on medications prepared for delivery to our long-term care facilities.
New Orders & Medication Adjustments
- Review and verify new and changed medication orders received throughout the day.
- Perform pharmacist quality control on medication changes prior to dispensing.
- Add new or changed medications to existing patient medication orders as appropriate.
- Help prioritize urgent, STAT, and time-sensitive medication needs.
- Work with the pharmacy team to ensure medication changes are processed accurately and delivered in a timely manner.
Pharmacy Operations
- Support the daily operation and workflow of the pharmacy.
- Help ensure prescriptions and facility medication orders are processed accurately and on time.
- Work collaboratively with pharmacy technicians and other team members to maintain an efficient workflow.
- Provide professional pharmacist oversight, direction, and support to pharmacy technicians and support staff.
- Assist with problem-solving to help prevent interruptions in pharmacy operations.
- Monitor workflow and help prioritize time-sensitive orders.
- Maintain an organized, professional, and efficient work environment.
Quality Assurance & Medication Safety
- Maintain high standards of accuracy throughout the dispensing process.
- Identify and help resolve medication safety concerns.
- Participate in pharmacy quality assurance and continuous improvement activities.
- Report and document medication errors, discrepancies, and incidents in accordance with pharmacy policy.
- Help identify opportunities to improve pharmacy workflow, accuracy, and patient safety.
Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure prescriptions are dispensed in accordance with applicable federal and North Carolina pharmacy laws and regulations.
- Ensure proper handling, storage, dispensing, and documentation of controlled substances.
- Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements.
- Follow pharmacy policies, procedures, quality standards, and accreditation requirements.
- Maintain professional standards consistent with North Carolina Board of Pharmacy requirements.
Team Support & Leadership
- Provide guidance and professional oversight to pharmacy technicians and support staff.
- Promote teamwork, professionalism, accountability, and effective communication.
- Assist technicians with medication-related questions and workflow concerns.
- Support technician training and competency development when needed.
- Contribute to a positive and respectful work environment.
Facility & Customer Service
- Communicate professionally with physicians, nurses, facility staff, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals.
- Respond appropriately to medication-related questions and concerns.
- Assist in resolving medication, prescription, or delivery-related issues.
- Provide responsive and professional service to the long-term care communities we serve.
Required Qualifications
- Active and unrestricted North Carolina Pharmacist License in good standing.
- Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (B.S. Pharmacy) or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to medication safety and accuracy.
- Ability to exercise sound professional judgment.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented pharmacy environment.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to provide professional oversight and direction to pharmacy technicians.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- 2–3 years of experience in long-term care, retail/community, institutional, or other pharmacy practice.
- Previous long-term care pharmacy experience is preferred but not required.
- Experience in high-volume prescription verification or medication packaging is a plus.
- Familiarity with the medication needs and workflow of skilled nursing, assisted living, or other long-term care settings is a plus.
