Position Description

DEFINITION:

To provide classroom and/or online instruction to students enrolled in the Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor program within Continuing Education.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

  • Receives direct supervision and/or technical direction from the Workforce Training Coordinator
  • May occasionally receive general supervision from full-time instructional staff
  • Exercises no supervision

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)



ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENT:

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide classroom and/or online instruction to students. Classes typically meet 2-3 times per week in the evenings. Time for each class is 3 hrs.
  • Utilize online learning platform, Canvas, to supplement in-class instruction.
  • Adopt and enhance established course syllabus in accordance with the NC Combined Course Library.
  • Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities.
  • Participate in curriculum development, evaluation, and changes as needed.
  • Develop and prepare supplemental materials to enhance lessons.
  • Develop and prepare tests/projects to evaluate student performance.
  • Develop assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance via Self Service and Canvas.
  • Maintain and submit all required paperwork in a neat, accurate, and timely fashion, including but not limited to: class rosters, registration forms, pay sheets, attendance forms, and grade rosters.
  • Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area and in accordance with CFCC policies and guidelines.

Other Important Functions:

  • Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons and recommend improvements as needed.
  • May be asked to provide coverage for other Instructors on an as needed basis.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

  • Professional skills, knowledge, and attributes within the field of Alcohol & Drug Counseling. These include, but are not limited to: criteria for certification; curriculum requirements for the 270 hours of didactic component of the certification process; private and public agency employment requirements; teaching to a diverse student base, etc.
  • Classroom instructional techniques.
  • Current trends, research, and development in the area of assignment.

Ability To:

  • Work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Understand and follow oral, written, and digital instructions
  • Interpret and apply College goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully, both orally, in writing, and online
  • Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Create effective audio-visual presentation for:
    • Making observations o Reading and writing o Communicating with others o Handling varied tasks simultaneously
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:
    • Standing or sitting for extended periods of time
    • Using technology
    • Handling varied tasks simultaneously
    • Bending, stooping, climbing or lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Maintain mental capacity, which allow the capability of:
    • Making sound decisions o Responding to questions o Demonstrating intellectual capabilities


EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:


Minimum Education/Training:

  • Bachelor degree with a major in Psychology, Social Work or other closely related field from a regionally accredited college or university.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor (formerly CSAC) or Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS)


Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the field of healthcare overall, and behavioral health/substance abuse specifically.


Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:

  • Master’s degree with a major in Psychology, Social Work or other closely related field.

  • Candidates who have obtained their education outside of the US and its territories must have their academic degree(s) validated, at their own expense, by an outside credential evaluation service as equivalent to the Baccalaureate or Master's degree conferred by a regionally accredited college or university in the United States.

  • To claim veterans’ preference, all eligible persons shall submit a DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, to Human Resources during the application process. Human Resources will verify eligibility.
