Veterinary Surgery Ward Assistant

About This Role
The surgery ward assistant is a critical part of the surgery team who cares for patients post-operatively and supports the surgeons and surgical nurses. This is an early career position where the right person will be trained and utilized to function as a vital team member while learning and honing the skills necessary to progress in various areas of veterinary medicine.
Responsibilities and Functions
- Obtain vital signs, provide food, and monitor patients for pain/comfort following surgical procedures.
- Check IV catheters for patency and bandages for fit and cleanliness.
- Administer oral and intravenous medications according to doctors' orders.
- Walk postoperative patients, using assistance when required.
- Communicate directly with the surgical nurses and surgeons regarding patients.
- Maintain ward cleanliness, including laundry and washing dishes.
- Assist the surgical nurses and assistants by restraining pets for radiographs when necessary.

- Schedules include some weekends and a holiday shift rotation.
- The initial training schedule may differ.
- Salary range for this role is $17 to $21/hr.

Qualifications
- Previous experience as a veterinary assistant or technician, with the knowledge of and the ability to administer oral and intravenous medications confidently
- Ability to solve mathematical equations for medication dosages
- Excellent communication and time management skills
- Ability to apply critical thinking to problem-solving
- Ability to handle multiple tasks
- Lifting and restraint of pets at least 50 pounds and the ability to work on feet most of the day
