Job Description: Oil Burner Technician
Position Overview
The Oil Burner Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of oil-fired heating systems, including furnaces, boilers, water heaters, and related components. This role ensures that equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with local codes and manufacturer specifications. The technician will diagnose issues, perform tune-ups, and provide exceptional customer service in residential and commercial settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, service, and repair oil-fired boilers, furnaces, and water heaters
- Perform routine maintenance and annual tune-ups, including nozzle replacement, filter changes, and combustion efficiency testing
- Troubleshoot and diagnose issues with burners, pumps, ignition systems, thermostats, and control wiring
- Conduct combustion and efficiency testing using calibrated instruments (e.g., smoke tester, combustion analyzer, draft gauge)
- Adjust burner settings for optimal fuel combustion and performance
- Ensure systems comply with local building codes, safety standards, and environmental regulations
- Maintain detailed service records, inspection reports, and recommendations for customers
- Communicate clearly with homeowners, property managers, or contractors regarding system status and repair needs
- Follow company and job site safety protocols at all times
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or GED required; completion of a trade or technical school program in HVAC or oil burner technology preferred
Experience:
- 2 years of hands-on experience servicing oil heating systems
- Experience with both residential and light commercial systems preferred
Licenses/Certifications:
- Valid Oil Burner Technician License (State or local jurisdiction requirement)
- EPA 608 Certification (preferred if working with combined oil and A/C systems)
- OSHA 10 or equivalent safety training a plus
- Skills:
- Strong mechanical and diagnostic abilities
- Knowledge of fuel oil delivery systems, combustion theory, and control circuits
- Proficient in reading wiring diagrams and equipment schematics
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and manage time efficiently
Working Conditions
- Field-based position; work performed in residential, commercial, and industrial settings
- May require working in confined spaces, basements, and outdoor environments
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and work in varying temperatures
- Requires valid driver’s license and clean driving record
