What are the responsibilities and job description for the CSDtv Intern - Video & Broadcast (Paid Intern) position at Canyons School District?
CSDtv is the student-led broadcast operation inside Canyons School District, producing 250 videos and live events a year across academics, arts, and athletics. We're looking for a Digital Broadcast Intern to join the team and help run the technical side of those productions.
This role is hands-on from day one. You'll be in the truck, behind the camera, and in the edit bay on real shows with real audiences. If you want broadcast experience that actually shows up on a reel, this is that.
Hours flex with the production schedule, so expect some evenings and weekends when events are running.
What the work looks like
You'll provide technical and production support across district broadcasts, working alongside student crews on everything from gear setup and lighting to camera ops, audio capture, and strike. A real part of the role is mentorship: helping students develop on-air presentation, interview technique, copy editing, and equipment skills. You're part of how they learn this craft.
On any given show, you'll operate studio cameras, manage livestreams through web platforms, and work with directors on shot sequences, camera movement, and the overall look of the production. Composition, framing, and lighting are tools you'll use regularly to get a show that feels intentional.
Skills you'll bring
You don't need years of broadcast experience to do this well. You do need:
- Genuine interest in video production, sound, lighting, and broadcast gear.
- Comfort with non-linear video editing.
- Working knowledge of both Mac and PC environments, plus enough networking instinct to troubleshoot when something stops talking to something else.
- Clear writing for production copy, run-of-show docs, and reports.
- Strong communication, because you'll be working with students, teachers, administrators, and event staff, often in the controlled chaos of a live show.
Ability to organize your work, prioritize on the fly, and keep your head when a show goes sideways (because eventually one will, and that's part of the learning).
Skills you'll build
Live broadcast operations at production scale. Studio camera technique. Livestream management across web platforms. Lighting design for live events. Crew leadership and creative direction with student teams. Real production troubleshooting under pressure. The kind of repetitions you cannot replicate in a classroom.
Logistics and compliance
Fingerprinting and criminal background check are required (standard for working with students). You'll need a valid Utah Driver's License and your own transportation to district sites; mileage for approved work-related travel is reimbursable. English fluency is required, and additional languages are welcome.
