What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head of Upper School position at CANNON SCHOOL INC?

As a member of the School's Leadership Team, the Head of Upper School reports directly to the Head of School and partners with other members of the leadership team to bolster and reinforce Cannon School’s culture in alignment with our mission and core values. The Head of Upper School leads all Upper School educators—faculty and staff—in building a growth-oriented educational program. In this primary objective, the Head of Upper School furthers Cannon’s vision, sustainably enhancing the Upper School experience by:

 

  • fostering a deep sense of community belonging
  • supporting and developing students and educators to their fullest potential
  • engaging on-campus and off-campus resources and partners 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Support Cannon School’s mission, vision, and core values
  • Serve as a member of Cannon’s Leadership Team
  • Advance Cannon’s strategy and organization-wide initiatives and objectives  
  • Collaborate with the Head of School to develop a vision for Upper School (US), grades 9-12, that promotes growth, development, and achievement in support of students
  • Develop and achieve annual learning/growth targets for the US 
  • Lead, develop and evaluate the Upper School’s key leaders including, the Assistant Head for Student Life, the Assistant Head for Academics, Deans of Students, Counselors, Learning Specialists and Department Chairs to create a learning environment that is growth-oriented, mission-aligned and student-centered. 
  • Facilitate the professional growth and development of US faculty & staff through evaluation, goal setting, succession planning, and a strong emphasis on personalized professional development.
  • Provide leadership and direction for curriculum review and enhancement in US in partnership with the Lower and Middle School Division Heads, the Director of Teaching and Learning and the Arts Director
  • In support of the US Counseling and Learning Support team, engage and partner with families, students and teachers regarding conflict, counseling, discipline, learning differences and behavioral accommodations 
  • Oversee the supervision of all administrative matters in the US including budget, scheduling, facilities usage, inter-divisional coordination to include athletics, and intra-departmental coordination.
  • Support the Upper School Athletics experience in partnership with the Athletic Director
  • Create a culture in which the US community; parents, students, faculty, staff and volunteers feel valued and accepted in support of the school’s fundraising and engagement goals in partnership with the Director of Diversity, Belongingness, and Engagement and Director of Advancement 
  • Partner with the Office of Admission on the development of a set of recruitment strategies specific to US, focusing on the enrollment of a vibrant, diverse student body consistent with Cannon's mission and educational philosophy 
  • Develop and execute a communications strategy in partnership with Marketing & Communications that timely and effectively updates and informs all key stakeholders throughout the school community 
  • Partner with the Director of Human Resources on all employment-related needs, including recruitment, orientation/onboarding, training, supervising, assessing, evaluating, and supporting US faculty and staff 
  • Work in partnership with Lower and Middle School Division Heads to maintain vertical alignment, strengthen cross-divisional communication, and ensure a unified educational approach.
Qualifications:

Bachelor’s required, Master's or Doctorate preferred

Previous primary or secondary school leadership required

  • Demonstrated leadership in education 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively and professionally with various constituents such as students, other division heads, parents, faculty/staff and vendors
  • Ability to maintain the greatest degree of confidentiality and professionalism
  • Superior organizational, administrative, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure both independently and within a team-oriented environment while maintaining a culture in alignment with the school’s mission in the Upper School
