What We’re Looking For:

Are you a passionate Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) ready to empower students and schools? Here’s what you’ll need to join our team:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Vision Rehabilitation, or a related field is required. A Master’s degree in Education of Students with Visual Impairments or a related field is preferred.

  • Certification: Valid Texas Educator Certification in Visual Impairment (EC-12) issued by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Certification through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist is preferred but not required.

  • Language Proficiency: Bilingual skills are preferred but not required.

Your Role :

As a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI), you will play a critical role in supporting students with visual impairments by fostering independence, academic success, and equitable access to their educational environment. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop Individualized Plans: Collaborate with ARD committees to create and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs) that address the unique needs of students with visual impairments.

  • Provide Specialized Instruction: Deliver instruction in core and expanded core curricula, including Braille literacy, assistive technology, daily living skills, sensory efficiency, and compensatory skills essential for students’ success.

  • Monitor Progress: Collect, analyze, and document student progress data to assess growth and effectiveness of instructional strategies, making necessary adjustments to meet IEP goals.

  • Collaborate with Teams: Work closely with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, orientation and mobility specialists, related service providers, and families to ensure students’ needs are met across all learning environments. Actively participate in ARD meetings and multidisciplinary discussions.

  • Promote Accessibility: Advocate for and implement accommodations, modifications, and assistive technologies to ensure equitable access to the general education curriculum and other learning opportunities.

  • Support Transition Goals: Prepare students for post-secondary education, vocational settings, and independent living by teaching skills such as self-advocacy, community navigation, and adaptive technology use.

  • Promote Safety and Independence: Develop plans to enhance students’ safety and independence in school, home, and community environments, including orientation and mobility skills when applicable.
