Cancer Registrar - PRN
SUMMARY: Under general supervision, the Cancer Registrar, identifies, registers, and maintains records of patients treated for cancer to provide data for physicians and research studies, utilizing a tumor registry data system to report this information to the state of Illinois. Responsible for the supervision and quality control of the data collection activities of abstractors. Analyzes data and disseminates information within established guidelines.

Education/Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent required, with Associates degree in medical field preferred. Basic familiarity of basic anatomy and medical terminology preferred. One year experience as a registrar or in a medical records department preferred. Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) through National Cancer Registrar’s Association (NCRA) preferred. Must take EPIC training and successfully pass required tests.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol. Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports. Ability to understand, analyze and interpret medical/forensic information and terminology. Knowledge of medical data collection codes. Ability to lead and train staff and/or students. Ability to verify data input and correct errors. Basic data entry and/or word processing skills. Knowledge of patient care charts and patient histories. Strong word processing and computer data entry skills. Ability to travel extensively by car to various outreach locations. Knowledge of data collection techniques. Ability to manage a sometimes demanding and fast-paced work environment related to changing patient needs, including work with patients with acute, chronic, and complex disease processes and those who are dying. Verbal and written English communication skills for safe and effective patient care and to meet documentation standards. Must be organized, be able to multi-task and have good interpersonal skills. Understands and practices patient confidentiality and follows HIPAA and CCSI policies. A positive attitude towards health care team members and diverse patient populations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF JOB: Standing, walking, sitting, climbing, carrying, pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, twisting, reaching, handling, kneeling, and wrist and digital dexterity. Speaking, hearing, and visual acuity to receive and interpret instructions; communicate with other health care professionals; use telephone system; and operate office equipment and computers. Exerting force (frequently up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 20 pounds or more) to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including office supplies, medical charts, x-rays, etc. Able to assist, when needed, with patient lifting, ambulating, and transfer of patients in wheelchairs, on gurneys and beds. Able to support persons (possibly 200 pounds or more) in emergency situations. Able to move quickly from place to place on occasion. Possible driving.
MENTAL DEMANDS: Must be able to work under stress and adapt to changing conditions.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Normal medical office environment. Frequent work interruptions. Job duties involve potential for exposure to blood and body fluids, chemical disinfectants, and limited exposure to chemicals such as cleaning disinfectants and toners for office equipment.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Identifies and compiles patient data from a range of relevant sources, including medical facilities and patients, and arranges for data collection as appropriate.
- Abstracts data, including patient demographics, diagnostic procedures, history and extent of disease, treatment, follow-up, physician, and related information from medical records; codes data into database according to strict protocol requirements.
- Prepares and electronically submits required reporting information to the state cancer database.
- Reviews data for completeness and accuracy and follows up with data sources as necessary.
- Researches medical and other relevant facilities, clinics, physician offices and pathology laboratories and identifies opportunities for gaining access to cancer data or for conducting special projects and studies, reviews data for accuracy and completeness, and enters information into database.
- Reviews incoming data documentation and performs re-abstracting and case finding for special projects as assigned.
- Performs data analysis and prepares reports within protocol parameters of the study and other guidelines.
- Develops training material and presents training to colleagues on special interest cases.
- May review pathology reports, cytology reports, bone marrow reports, autopsy reports, death certificates, disease indices and radiation, oncology and physician logs to identify possible cancer cases.
- May work on special studies/projects as assigned or work with researchers on special case reviews.
- May attend and participate in for various Tumor Board Conferences; work closely with Pathology, Radiology, other physicians and various departments to ensure needed patient studies are available in a timely manner for Conferences.
- May perform duties needed to meet accreditation/certification standards.
