Position Summary
The Deputy Jailer is responsible for maintaining safety, security, and order within the adult detention facility while ensuring the care, custody, and control of inmates. This position performs direct supervision of incarcerated individuals, enforces facility policies and procedures, conducts security rounds, and supports the daily operation of the jail in accordance with federal, state, and local laws.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The duties listed below are representative of the work performed, but are not all-inclusive:
- Maintains security and control of inmates in housing units, recreation areas, transport details, and other areas of the facility
- Conducts inmate counts, security checks, and routine inspections of cells and common areas
- Enforces jail rules and regulations; addresses disruptive behavior and resolves conflicts
- Performs intake and release procedures including booking, fingerprinting, searches, and property inventory
- Monitors inmate conduct and ensures compliance with facility policies
- Responds to emergencies including fights, disturbances, medical emergencies, and evacuation procedures
- Escorts inmates to medical, visitation, court, recreation, and other designated areas
- Operates security equipment including radios, CCTV monitoring systems, key control, and control room systems
- Completes accurate documentation and reports including incident reports, log entries, and shift summaries
- Assists with inmate transportation, court security, and transfers as assigned
- Provides professional and respectful interaction with inmates, coworkers, and the public at all times
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate agency vehicles
- Must pass a background investigation and drug screening
- No felony convictions
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, overtime, rotating shifts, and emergency call-in as required
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior corrections, law enforcement, military, or security experience
- CPR/First Aid certification
- Familiarity with inmate management systems, report writing, and detention operations
- Strong communication, conflict-resolution, and teamwork skills

- Ability to maintain professionalism in stressful or volatile situations
- Strong observation skills and attention to detail
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions
- Ability to safely restrain or control individuals when necessary
- Ability to write clear and accurate reports

Physical Requirements
Deputy Jailers must be able to:
- Stand/walk for extended periods
- Climb stairs and navigate facility areas frequently
- Lift and carry up to 50 lbs
- Safely restrain individuals as needed
- Respond quickly to emergencies
