What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Manager, Overdose Prevention Initiative position at CAMPAIGN FOR TOBACCO-FREE KIDS?

The Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), a program of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK), supports policy change campaigns around the globe to improve public health. The Policy Research Manager supports the GHAI Overdose Prevention Initiative’s efforts to advance policy solutions that save lives by expanding access and removing barriers to evidence-based treatment and harm reduction services in the U.S. Working closely with the Initiative’s advocacy and communications teams, the Policy Research Manager will conduct and present research and analysis to inform the Initiative’s policy positions, legislation, and communications campaigns. This position is based in Washington, DC and reports to the Associate Director of Advocacy for Overdose Prevention.


WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH:

  • Contribute to the development of high-quality research and advocacy materials that communicate the need for policy change to key decision makers, the media, and the public. Create and update fact sheets, presentations, reports, talking points, etc. in collaboration with other staff.
  • Respond to time-sensitive requests for information and research materials, including assisting with responses to Congressional inquiries.
  • Serve as a resource and subject matter expert on policy issues related to substance use disorder prevention, treatment, recovery, harm reduction, as well as other issues/topics.
  • Develop command of the vast information resources of the Initiative and respond to inquiries from staff, partners, media, and the public for information.
  • Fact-check documents, presentations and other materials for GHAI and our advocacy partners.
  • Gather, organize and manage large datasets in Microsoft Excel, including state-specific statistics on prevalence and trends in substance use. Update materials and respond to requests using these data.
  • Monitor and collect information on the treatment industry activities, tactics, and marketing strategies and examples through social media, news media, and industry financial reporting.
  • Organize and maintain the Initiative’s research resources – publications, fact sheets, presentations, etc. and assist in tracking and locating new research.


SKILLS YOU'LL BRING TO THE ROLE:

  • The ideal candidate will have two to three years of professional experience and a bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Excellent research, writing, communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working with numbers and data.
  • Ability to review research studies and synthesize information.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines and work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to interact and communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to take initiative, solve problems creatively and work independently.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Experience in substance use policy or public health preferred. Issue advocacy, legislative or political campaign experience a plus.

A non-profit organization established in 1996, the Campaign works with more than 130 organizational partners, including public health, medical, education, civic, corporate, youth and religious organizations. The Campaign does not accept any government or tobacco industry funding.
