Minimum Qualifications:
- A sincere desire and genuine interest in working with children ages 6-16 in an outdoor camp environment, with ability to provide daily swim instruction
- Current certifications in First Aid, CPR, Red Cross Lifeguard Training, and Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
- Experience in developing and delivering recreational aquatic programming, suitable for all skill levels, and the ability to provide instruction to both campers and staff
- Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to teach, schedule, manage, and supervise a small aquatics staff team
- Strong commitment to safety, with the ability to observe staff performance, enforce safety regulations, uphold emergency procedures, and apply effective management techniques
- Reliable visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and physical safety hazards around the pool area.
- Physical capability to respond quickly and effectively to situations requiring first aid; must be able to assist campers in emergencies (e.g., fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and maintain the stamina necessary for constant supervision
- Exemplary character, including enthusiasm, patience, self control, integrity and ability to adapt well to a dynamic camp setting
Job Description
- Oversee all aquatic operations at camp, ensuring a safe, fun, and instructional swim program for campers of all skill levels. Manage and supervise the lifeguard staff, maintain strict safety standards, and coordinate daily lessons and activities at the pool.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Maintain a well-organized daily pool operation and ensure a consistently safe, positive aquatic environment for campers and staff
- Evaluate/assess campers' swim abilities and, with support from pool specialists, develop creative lesson plans that align with camp goals
- Train, schedule, and supervise the aquatics staff, providing ongoing coaching and feedback throughout the camp season; conduct mid-season and end-of-season performance evaluations of all pool specialists
- Enforce all safety protocols, emergency procedures, and pool rules, including conducting regular safety checks of equipment, pool conditions, and staffing coverage
- Conduct initial and end-of-season inventory, monitor proper use of all equipment, identify needed repairs, and ensure safe storage of all materials
- Carry a charged walkie-talkie at all times during open pool hours
- Assist with planning, coordinating, and running any special events held at or near the pool area
- Notify Head Counselors of any concerns, including camper or general staff behavior issues or challenges during activity periods
- Complete an accident report for every incident that occurs
Some physical requirements of a Waterfront Director position could be endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate program equipment and activities. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper and staff activities/programs. Willing to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering program in the facility available. Operate with daily exposure to various weather conditions.
