Camp Nurse

Camp Med-o-lark is seeking a Registered Nurse to join us mid-season in beautiful Washington, ME, working with kids ages 7-16.

Compensation: starts at $1,000/week, dependent on experience. We are open to commuters, but on-site accommodations, meals, laundry, and travel assistance provided. This is a non-bunk role, living in adult housing.

In addition to weekly pay, we also offer free tuition for any camp-aged children.

Position Summary

The Camp Nurse is the health-care lead at Camp Medolark, overseeing all medical services, health supervision, and health-policy compliance. You will ensure that all campers and staff receive appropriate and timely medical care, that the health center operates according to established protocols and standing orders, and that documentation and reporting meet Maine’s rules and ACA guidelines. You will collaborate with camp leadership to promote a safe, inclusive, and healthy camp community.

Essential Responsibilities & Functions

Clinical & Health-Care Services

• Provide daily medical care—including first aid, illness/injury assessment, medication administration, and follow-up care—for campers and staff
• Administer medications following physician/nurse-practitioner standing orders, and maintain locked, secure medication storage as required by Maine
• Evaluate and treat minor conditions on-site; refer to external providers or hospitals when required.
• Ensure health intake forms, immunization records, and camper/staff health histories are complete, current, and stored confidentially.
• Assist campers with chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, allergies, diabetes), monitoring and coordinating care plans.
• Collaborate in health-education efforts: hygiene, hydration, sun safety, mental wellness, injury prevention—aligned with ACA HW (Health & Wellness) standards.

Health Center Management & Compliance

• Oversee the Health Center’s operations: cleanliness, equipment/inventory, first-aid kits, emergency supplies, and readiness for outdoor/trip programs. Maine Rules require standing orders and onsite qualified health supervisor.
• Serve as, or supervise, the health-supervision personnel required by Maine Rule 10-144 (RN/LPN/NP/PA/EMT or equivalent).
• Maintain accurate treatment logs and documentation as mandated by Maine Rule
• Ensure all health-supervision, medication, and emergency response protocols adhere to ACA standards for camps.
• Participate in emergency preparedness: coordinate with Operations Director on safety plans, disaster response and health-care drills.

Staff & Camper Support & Communication

• Liaise with counselors, staff, and leadership to monitor camper wellness, respond to mental-health or behavioral concerns, and coordinate follow-up care.
• Communicate with parents/guardians regarding health concerns or incidents, maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
• Provide training/orientation to Health Center Assistants, and ensure all health-care staff understand delegate scope and camp-specific protocols (consistent with ACA camp nursing practice).

Regulatory & Accreditation Alignment

• Ensure camp remains in compliance with Maine youth camp licensing rules (10-144 CMR Ch. 208) regarding health supervision, medication protocols, record-keeping, and staff training.
• Support the camp’s ACA accreditation efforts by implementing and monitoring ACA health & wellness standards
• Participate in reviews, audits, or inspections by the Maine CDC and ACA-accreditation evaluators as needed.

Qualifications

• Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in Maine (or eligible for Maine licensure)
• Current CPR for Healthcare Providers and First Aid certifications required; preferably additional certifications in Wilderness First Aid, EMR/EMT experience for camp/trip settings.
• Prior experience in pediatrics, camp nursing, school or community health preferred.
• Strong clinical assessment and triage skills in a remote or residential setting.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and record-keeping skills; ability to manage confidential health data.
• Ability to live and work in a residential camp environment, be flexible, resourceful, and collaborative.
• Strong commitment to safe, inclusive, developmentally appropriate care for the camp community
