Maintenance Technician

Company Description Camp Alvernia is a summer day camp for boys and girls that preserves the culture and feel of a traditional sleepaway camp while offering the convenience of a day camp setting. Located on 15 wooded acres along Centerport Harbor, the camp provides a scenic and active outdoor environment. Camp Alvernia emphasizes a strong culture of respect and is supported by dedicated staff who enjoy working with children. Since 1888, the camp has served children, youth, and families from Suffolk County and across Long Island, focusing on growth, community, and positive experiences.

Camp Alvernia is a summer day camp facility that hosts a private primary school and two private daycare programs in its offseason. The Maintenance Technician is a vital member of the Alvernia team, responsible for the hands-on work required to keep the campus safe, clean, and welcoming. Reporting to the Facilities Manager, this role supports the daily care of Alvernia’s buildings and grounds through a combination of routine cleaning, basic maintenance, and seasonal program transitions.

• Janitorial Excellence: Perform routine cleaning of restrooms, common areas, and retreat spaces to ensure a high standard of hospitality.
• Operational Turnover: Conduct thorough cleaning between usage events to prepare spaces for new guests.
• Waste Management: Execute regular trash collection and disposal across campus.
• Facility Preservation: Perform light painting, cosmetic touch-ups, and debris removal from roofs and gutters to maintain structural integrity.
• Repair Support: Execute basic repairs and maintenance tasks as assigned, using discretion 

• Landscaping: Support lawn care, landscaping, and exterior appearance maintenance for all buildings and walkways.
• Seasonal Transitions: Manage leaf cleanup, snow shoveling, and ice control to ensure safe passage during winter months.
• Program Logistics: Assist with the physical setup and breakdown of the summer camp program.

• Inventory & Tools: Maintain an organized inventory of supplies and keep tools and workspaces in professional condition.
• Vehicle Care: Perform basic upkeep and washing of campus vehicles.
• Service Coordination: Coordinate vehicle services, such as oil changes and NYS inspections, in collaboration with the Facilities Manager.
• Equipment Maintenance: Ensure all maintenance equipment is clean and functional.

• Space Preparation: Prepare indoor and outdoor environments for various events and usages.
• Tenant Relations: Respond to routine tenant requests as assigned by Facilities Manager and assist with deliveries or material movement as directed.

• Safety & Compliance: Strictly adhere to all safety procedures and protocols.
• Communication: Promptly report campus issues or maintenance needs to the Facilities Manager.
• Reliability: Complete all assigned daily maintenance tasks with diligence and efficiency.
• Proactive Stewardship: Demonstrate initiative in identifying and addressing property maintenance needs before they become issues

• Education: High School Diploma or GED required; technical certifications in trade skills (plumbing, electrical, or carpentry) are a plus.
• Experience: Minimum of 1–3 years of experience in facility maintenance, custodial services, or a related field (e.g., landscaping, construction, or property management).
• Licensure: A valid New York State Driver’s License and a clean driving record are required for the operation of campus vehicles.

• Technical Proficiency: Ability to operate basic hand tools, power tools, lawn care equipment (mowers, trimmers), and snow removal machinery.
• General Maintenance: Foundational knowledge of building systems, including basic plumbing, electrical, and carpentry repairs.
• Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, maintain an organized tool shop, and keep accurate inventory records.
• Interpersonal Skills: A professional demeanor with the ability to interact courteously with tenants, summer camp staff, and guests.
• Reliability: Strong work ethic with a proven track record of punctuality and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

• Strength & Stamina: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. regularly and perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods.
• Mobility: Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and squat. Comfort working on ladders and performing maintenance on roofs or gutters is essential.
• Environmental Exposure: Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat during summer camp setup and freezing temperatures/snow during winter months.
• Manual Dexterity: Sufficient coordination and dexterity to operate machinery and perform detailed repair work.
