Position Title: Peer support for our Mobile Resource Services

Reports to: Program Manager
Classification: Part Time

Location: Mobile sites within the community

Salary: $28 an hour

Shift: Relief / On call

Position Summary: The Mobile Shower Peer Support Worker plays a vital role in supporting unhoused individuals accessing the mobile shower program. Drawing on lived experience, the Peer Support Worker provides compassionate engagement, fosters trust, and helps connect participants to resources such as housing navigation, mental health services, medical care, and community supports. This role ensures that mobile shower services operate in a safe, welcoming, and dignified manner.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Welcome and engage participants in a respectful, nonjudgmental, and trauma-informed way.
  • Assist with program operations, including sign-in, distributing hygiene supplies, and maintaining cleanliness of the shower units and surrounding area.
  • Share lived experience as appropriate to build trust, reduce stigma, and encourage participants in their recovery or housing journey.
  • Provide peer support by listening actively, offering encouragement, and modeling positive coping strategies.
  • Support participants in connecting to onsite services (housing navigation, healthcare providers, case management, etc.).
  • Monitor shower schedules and waitlists to ensure fair and efficient access.
  • De-escalate conflicts or crises in a calm and professional manner, following program protocols.
  • Maintain accurate records of participant engagement and services provided.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and supervision to enhance peer support skills.
  • Uphold program policies, including confidentiality, safety, and harm-reduction practices

 

 

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Lived experience of homelessness, housing instability, recovery, or behavioral health challenges (required).
  • Strong commitment to peer values: respect, mutuality, empowerment, and self-determination.
  • Ability to engage with diverse populations with empathy and cultural humility.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Reliable, flexible, and able to work in an outdoor/mobile environment.
  • Basic record-keeping and organizational skills.
  • Bilingual skills (preferred).
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record (preferred, may be required depending on program needs)

 

Position Requirements:

  • Physical: Occasionally required to push/pull objects up to 50 lbs., and to lift/carry objects up to 25 lbs. Frequently required to perform moderately difficult manipulative tasks such as typing, writing, etc. Must be able to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods.
  • Sensory: Frequently required to read documents, written reports, and plans. Must be able to distinguish normal sounds with some background noise, as in answering the phone, interacting with residents and staff, etc. Must be able to speak clearly and understand/be understood using the English language.
  • Cognitive: Frequently required to concentrate on moderate detail with constant interruption. Must be able to attend a task/function for 20-45 minutes at a time. Frequently required to understand and relate to specific ideas, several at a time. Must be able to remember multiple tasks/assignments given to self and others over a period of several days.
  • Environmental Conditions: Frequent exposure to varied office and mixed (residential/office) environments. Occasional exposure to toxins and poisonous substances, dust, and loud noises.
  • Equipment: Frequently required to use a computer, phone, and fax machine.

 

Essential Requirements:

  • Must be able to meet and receive a criminal records clearance, as required by Title XXII, other licensing regulations, and Caminar practices.
  • This position may require limited, occasional, or frequent driving.  If required, a valid California driver's license, a reliable personal vehicle, and current personal auto insurance is required by law.  In addition, an MVR sufficient to obtain and maintain insurability under agency auto liability policies are all essential job requirements.
  • Must be able to pass post offer, pre-employment medical and drug tests as required under State Community Care Licensing regulations and/or agency policies.
  • If applicable, a personal cell phone with reliable service and a data plan to use for business purposes.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certification.
