SSS Student Peer Mentor:

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Student Support Services (SSS) Student Peer Mentor position is a part-time leadership role that requires professionalism, flexibility, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to supporting student success. SSS Student Peer Mentors work one-on-one with a diverse population of SSS participants, including first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities, to provide guidance, encouragement, and connection to academic, personal, and campus resources. Peer Mentors assist students in navigating university systems, accessing on-campus and community services, developing effective study and time-management skills, and adjusting successfully to college life.

Peer Mentors are expected to identify potential barriers to student success and provide proactive support, referrals, and follow-up to help students overcome challenges. This position requires excellent communication and active listening skills, the ability to maintain confidentiality, and the capacity to build supportive mentoring relationships with students from diverse backgrounds. Mentors must maintain accurate, organized, and timely documentation of all mentee interactions, referrals, and progress in accordance with program expectations.

The SSS Student Peer Mentor must demonstrate strong organizational and time-management skills while maintaining a flexible schedule that accommodates students' availability, including occasional evening or special-event hours. Peer Mentors are required to attend all mandatory trainings, monthly staff meetings, workshops, and professional development activities to strengthen mentoring and leadership skills. Additionally, mentors actively participate in SSS events and activities designed to increase student engagement, academic achievement, retention, and overall success in the university setting.

As representatives of the SSS Program, Student Peer Mentors are expected to serve as positive role models by demonstrating professionalism, dependability, academic responsibility, leadership, and respectful behavior at all times. They should foster an inclusive, welcoming, and supportive environment that encourages new and continuing SSS participants to become engaged, confident, and successful members of the university community.

Employment is contingent upon continued funding through the U.S. Department of Education TRIO Student Support Services Program.

Preferred QUALIFICATIONS: Current undergraduate student with at least 30 completed credit hours or graduate student in good academic standing and an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher. Enrolled full-time during employment (12 credit hours undergraduate; or more credit hours; 6 hours graduate). Non-students with a Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, or a related field. Experience in working with college-aged students.

Required Qualifications: Must be willing to serve as a peer mentor throughout the academic year, contingent upon satisfactory performance and continued eligibility. Commit to working with students on a one-on-one basis, attend monthly group meetings and training to learn activities designed to help all Student Support Services students build skills needed to achieve success in a university setting. The SSS Student Peer Mentor must be well-organized in maintaining accurate documentation of mentoring activities and able to communicate effectively with a diverse student population through in-person meetings, phone calls, texts, and email.

Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate an understanding of the challenges faced by first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities.

SALARY: $11.00/Hourly.

Hours: Approximately 10 hours per week. Some evening and weekend activities may be required.
