Primary Purpose:


The Principal Mechanical Engineer specializes in fixed mechanical equipment reliability (drums, air coolers/ heat exchangers, filters, tanks, towers, loading arms, flares, dock structures, piping systems, spring supports, pipe vibration, PRDs, valves, insulation and fireproofing systems). Responsible for providing technical direction, expertise, and leadership of all related mechanical reliability activities.

This position is in Hackberry, LA. Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is required. Employees’ primary residence must be located within a one-hour drive from the Hackberry plant site.

Responsibilities/ Duties:


  • Work in a safe and efficient manner. Utilizes Stop Work Authority as necessary. Inputs a minimum of one quality safety audit/ observation per month in Enablon. All meetings begin with a safety topic.
  • Supports facility and contract personnel with all aspects of fixed equipment mechanical reliability including pressure relief devices (PRDs).
  • Takes initiative to lead 5-Why/ RCA investigations for proactive correction of reliability problems to achieve production reliability goal. Participates in incident investigations.
  • Reports and ensures correction of all non-conformances. 
  • Supports Project Engineering Team as Fixed Mechanical SME. Assists with FEL project development and review of IFA/ IFC project documents.
  • Owns the IWR Program including risk ranking of IWRs and KPIs. 
  • Owns the IOW Program including KPI reporting.
  • Develop and monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and effective reporting mechanisms for all the programs managed by this position. 
  • Responsible for the fixed equipment specifications (piping, equipment, valves, insulation, etc.). 
  • Performs mechanical calculations including stress analysis, flange loading, vessel calculations, etc. as required.
  • Manages third party consultants and contractors used for equipment and piping reliability engineering projects and surveys. 
  • Completes ESR (Engineering Service Request) evaluations and makes recommendations by the due date. Initiates MOC’s, inputs SAP notifications and tracks the execution.
  • Preparation and participation in audits (FERC, PHMSA, Insurance, PSM, HSE, etc.) including the planning, budgeting, prioritization, execution and completion of resulting action items. 
  • Performs or oversees fitness-for-service assessments in accordance with API 579/ASME FFS-1. 
  • Updates Weekly Report with tasks completed including communication of any problems requiring escalation.
  • Spending within budget constraints (tracks spending). Supports budget planning.
  • Provides PSSR, Turnaround, Maintenance, Inspector, and QA/QC mechanical support.
  • Supports PRD Quality Specialist with field and shop inspections as necessary.
  • Creates and reviews procedures and scopes of work as required. Recognizes and takes action to eliminate all gaps in PM of valves, equipment and piping.
  • Participates in PHAs as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:


Education/Certifications/Licenses:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Professional Engineering License in good standing with the state of Texas or Louisiana is preferred.


Experience:

  • Requires a minimum of 10 years of experience in the petrochemical industry.
  • Experience in root cause analysis and familiarity with formal methodology.
  • Experience with piping and pressure vessel design software (CAESAR II, COMPRESS) preferred.

  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (ASME, API, CFR 193, NFPA, API 579/ASME FFS-1, API 580/581, API 510, API 570, API 653, API 571, etc.).
  • Knowledge of relevant construction and fabrication codes (e.g., ASME Sec IX, Sec VIII, B31.1, B31.3, B31.8, API 1104, AWS D1.1, NACE MR0175).
  • Strong technical management abilities with effective project management and leadership skills, initiative, decision-making skills and problem-solving abilities. Must be able to analyze data, identify issues, recommend, develop, and implement solutions.
  • Ability to organize, plan, control, coordinate, and effectively manage cross-functional assignments and projects.
  • Sufficient computer skills to provide quantitative and written reports, via PCMS, SAP, MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), etc.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Possesses the personality and ability to relate to and to establish a mutually respectful relationship with 1) management, 2) peers and 3) the various facility level workers who are all responsible for ensuring good operations. 
  • Ability to interface with a culturally diverse range of personnel with varying disciplines, backgrounds, and experience levels.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with terminal facility employees, vendors, and suppliers.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English.

Physical Requirements:


  • Must be able to stand, walk, climb, sit, kneel, twist, bend, pull, push, carry, lift, reach overhead and drive. Most activities involve movement of either the upper and lower body extremities or both and the joints associated with these areas of the body.
  • Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces and climb stairs and ladders that ranges from 4 ft to 200 ft.
  • Must be able to enter confined spaces.
  • Must be able to lift equipment needed to perform work.
  • Must be able to wear safety equipment such as safety harness, respirator and other protective equipment as needed to perform job.
  • When outdoors, this classification is exposed to extremes of heat, cold, loud noise and dust. 
  • Must be able to sit at a desk and operate a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Must be willing to be on call; work outside of normal business hours as required.
  • Must be willing to travel for training and meetings as required.
