Summary/Objective
The Specialty Pharmacist plays a critical role in the delivery of high-quality pharmaceutical care to patients with complex, chronic, and rare conditions requiring specialty medications. This position ensures optimal medication therapy outcomes through clinical expertise, patient education, and coordination with providers, payers, and specialty pharmacies.
Essential Functions
Clinical Services:
- Provide comprehensive medication therapy management for patients receiving specialty medications (e.g., oncology, rheumatology, neurology, infectious diseases, etc).
- Monitor patient outcomes, adherence, and side effects; intervene as necessary.
- Collaborate with providers to optimize therapeutic regimens and ensure evidence-based care.
Dispensing Responsibilities:
- Accurately dispense specialty medications in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Verify prescriptions for appropriateness, dosage, interactions, and contraindications.
- Ensure proper storage, handling, and labeling of specialty medications.
- Maintain inventory of specialty drugs, including cold chain management and expiration tracking.
- Oversee technician activities related to specialty medication preparation and dispensing.
- Document dispensing activities and ensure compliance with accreditation standards (e.g., URAC, ACHC).
Patient Support:
- Educate patients and caregivers on medication use, administration, and potential side effects.
- Assist with prior authorizations, insurance navigation, and financial assistance programs.
- Serve as a liaison between patients, providers, and specialty pharmacies to ensure continuity of care.
Operational Duties:
- Maintain compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., URAC, ACHC, state boards).
- Document clinical interventions and patient interactions in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and data reporting.
Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with pharmacy technicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
Licenses/Certifications
- Active pharmacist license in good standing in Indiana with willingness to obtain more state licenses.
Education
- Doctor of Pharmacy from an accredited institution.
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience in specialty pharmacy, clinical pharmacy, or ambulatory care preferred.
- Familiarity with specialty medication dispensing, reimbursement, and patient support programs.
Skills/Competencies
- Strong clinical knowledge in specialty disease states.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with pharmacy dispensing systems and EHR platforms.
